Well based from my understanding… Everything in the MV was a memory, apart from the last scene after the credits.
So my theory is that the members are all dead and it’s only Jin who’s still alive and somehow, their memory haunts him to the point that there are times when he feels like they are still there. (PS: The cause of their deaths can be led back to the I NEED U MV.)
As you can see, Jin holds a camera and though it says “HD” the video appears in low definition, kind of like an old movie. This is the reason why I think everything was a memory…like we’re seeing everything through Jin’s eyes. The happy moments and all that stuff, he was actually reminiscing.
Now, why do I think the members are dead? Because in all the scenes that they are all together, if you look at it in a cinematic perspective, the aura of the video is different. There’s a dream-like haze to it–a warmer light which sets a lighter mood. This causes an effect to make you think that they are on “the other side”–that it is a memory. (PLUS! The song “Butterfly” always plays on these parts so it seems like it).
As for Taehyung, yes he is dead too. He committed suicide (by jumping off something–since there are two scenes when he was showed at the top of some kind of structure and he’s giving that vibe that he wants to jump off), probably because of his guilt for hurting (or killing) his father. I think it’s his father because the picture in the first part showed a man and baby which could be him and his dad.
And I also think Jin actually saw him commit suicide, considering that in the last part, he turns the camera towards him–which could only mean he had a memory of it so he must have witnessed his death.
In the first scene, I think Taehyung called Jin. But I think (this is me thinking too much lol) they weren’t able to properly meet after that and Jin was only able to witness Taehyung’s suicide the moment he got there. (hahaha definitely me thinking too much. But who knows, right?)
They say when you die, the people who are most precious to you (or the ones you love the most) come searching for you. So I think that’s what the second scene represents. How BTS came to Taehyung in that abandoned pool and did you see the way Taehyung looked? The way he was so happy to finally be with them. It was the same look he gave them before he jumped off, actually. Almost like he was saying: “I’ll see you soon.”
Now let’s go back to Jin. I told you guys he’s still alive, right? And I’m sticking to that notion because whenever they are in that “dream” state (dream state: the scenes when they are all together): he ALWAYS has the camera on him which could be a symbol of him being “not one of them”. He’s seeing them through the lenses, not through his eyes. So that proves the fact that Jin is indeed alive and he’s just reminiscing on those memories.
Jin may be deranged or believed in that dream-like state too much since he was found by the sea in that truck at the end of the video. And when he looked at the photo in the glove compartment, he sees his picture. THE PICTURE WHICH SHOULD’VE HAD YOONGI IN IT (that was the photo Namjoon took of them at the gas station). But Yoongi has faded which only proves that he is indeed dead.
When Jin’s smile fades, it’s a representation of him coming into terms with reality. The reality being: his friends are dead and he is all alone. :(
It’s an open ending so who knows what happens to Jin next.
So that’s my theory. I hope I made sense. LOL! This video was aesthetically beautiful in terms of cinematic sense and technicalities. It’s art and so inspired. I just loved it so much. <3
