日治之初的1896年(明治29)，臺灣新報出現「臺北八景」，是文武廟的惠良寫真館根據黑屋氏所撰的八景，向大眾募集題詠，分別是「戍樓笛聲」、「觀岫拖嵐」、「蘆洲帆影」、「鐵橋夕照」、「屯山積雪」、「蘭渚曉風」、「稻江新月」、「錫嶺晚霞」。土居香國針對前五景發表詩句。

隔幾天，建昌街的清涼館落成之際，特別以該館可以眺望臺北八景之六景，做為宣傳的廣告，以招徠客人，這可能是「八景」做為觀光廣告的開端。
