From the crypt #5
From the world renowned Notre Dame to the dreary catacombs of Paris, France is no stranger to gothic culture and symbolism. Yet for all the macabre aesthetic it boasts with aplomb, there are only a small number of French bands actively linked to the scene.
So this week's discovery is a breath of fresh air. Meet Contre Jour, a three piece cold wave outfit from Nice, who weave dark melodic synthpop with all the classic elements you'd come to expect from Bauhaus or Cocteau Twins. The song featured here is ABÎME, a whimsical fantasy soundscape from their 2014 EP of the same name.
Fun trivia: cold wave gets its name from the late 1970s, back when UK publication Sounds wrote of early synthpop pioneers Kraftwerk: "New musick: the cold wave". In France, the post-punk scene was dubbed "la vague froide", a phrase often used to describe influential new wave act Marquis de Sade.
