what I fucking love is how tvl was written in the 80s and lestat is constantly sayinf shit like “as the kids say 🤪 that’s so rad!!” or whatever, and to me, reader of the vampire lestat in this modern age, that does NOT register the way anne rice intended it.

like it is supposed to feel jarring and insane. it is supposed to feel like lestat has been violently submerged in modern young people trends and culture and is now repeating all the new words he learned like a beautiful fresh baby. but because the book is from 1985, all I think is oh interesting huh I didn’t know that slang term even originated in the 80s how vintage how retro how lestat wow he’s so embarrassing aw aw so cute.

but amc in all their incredible genius decided that honoring anne rice’s original vision of writing an extremely modern and weird book that fully embodied the era it was written in was more important then bringing back the 80s nostalgia thing that streaming services love and it’s incredible to me. now I get to listen to lestat say shit like “labubu FOMO cosplay reddit discord Gen Z more like gen SNOOZE 🤪🤪🤪 safe space pronouns donald trump labubu tiktok dance 🕺🏻” and suddenly I understand what it felt like to be a young anne rice reader in 1985. OK I keep seeing people refer to the Michigan parasite outbreak and then others will chime in “it’s in my state too!” so to clarify this for everyone it is a NATIONWIDE outbreak reported in 31 US states as of today, July 12th 2026. There is no reason to assume it is not present in the rest of them

NBC News’ tally shows at least 26 states have reported cases of the parasitic stomach illness, as health authorities race to find the source

The CDC is tracking cases but they are significantly lagging behind the states on numbers (their data is weeks behind) so it’s probably going to be most effective to check your individual state’s infectious disease tracking.

This is a parasite that usually causes about 3000 cases of illness per year in the USA, Michigan currently has reported about 2900 (the confusion about “Michigan outbreak” is because Michigan is the first that caught an uptick in cases and has been very proactive about trying to trace them). Last official update from Massachusetts was 18 cases here centered in Greater Boston. The CDC recommends NOT assuming there are no sources of the parasite in your state even if no cases have been reported.

It isn’t an unknown illness but it is an unusual quantity of cases, and the fact that they haven’t been able to pin down the source after weeks of tracking is what makes it particularly concerning this year (harder to contain).

Wash your hands, wash your produce, cook it ideally, and advocate for farm workers to have access to safe and hygienic toilet facilities

Key information from Michigan Department of Health & Human Services, published 07/13/26:

The parasite is resistant to routine chemical disinfection and washing alone cannot guarantee its removal.

Prioritize cooking. Cooking to a temperature of at least 158 F (70 C) is the safest option.

Peel produce. Peeling is highly effective for food items with removable skin as the parasite sits on the outer surface. 

Wash all fresh produce. “Pre-washed” does not guarantee safety and rewashing bagged lettuce is unlikely to remove cyclospora.

Lettuce-specific safety measures:

Purchase whole heads. (Not salad mixes or chopped lettuce.)

Discard two-to-three outer layers.

Wash inner leaves thoroughly under clean running water. 

Other tips (Source: AP, interview with pediatrician and med school professor, published 07/10/26):

When washing items like cilantro and basil, separate the leaves.

For green onions, cut off the roots, remove the outer layer and run them under water while rubbing the surface.

Research shows that washing fruits and vegetables in vinegar can be helpful. Vinegar won’t kill the parasite but can help remove it. (Read article for more detail.)

Don’t forget to wash cutting boards and countertops.

It's possible to eat fruits and vegetables safely at this time if you take necessary precautions during food prep, focusing on produce that is easy to peel, cook, and/or scrub thoroughly while washing.

The following foods have been specifically linked to previous cyclospora outbreaks in the United States and Canada:

Bagged salad mixes and kits.

Fresh cilantro (coriander leaves).

Fresh basil.

Raspberries.

Snow peas.

Green onions (scallions).

If you do become ill: 

People experiencing frequent, watery diarrhea are encouraged to contact their health care provider and specifically request testing for cyclospora as routine stool tests may miss the parasite.

Cyclosporiasis is treated with antibiotics along with rest and drinking plenty of fluids to maintain hydration.
