El hinduismo y el budismo comparten algunos seres mitológicos de naturaleza benevolente o maligna, con algunas diferencias. Por un lado están las apsaras, amables ninfas celestiales de increíble belleza,  graciosas, juguetonas, y que por las noches en los bosques, a la pálida luz de la blanca luna, en torno a la estátua de alguna deidad, solían reunirse con otros espíritus a danzar de forma voluptuosa.
