I just finished Murakami! Now re-reading 1984. second time going through this book. It broke my heart the first time I read it when I was younger. Liking it lowkey foreshadowed one of my favourite films being blade runner 2049.

found Hotel LaChapelle at the reference library.
I imagine being alive and well versed culturally and firm in my pursuit for the arts, when David LaChapelle was starting out, working at interview mag and seeing his work in print ever so often. Life then I guess, didn’t feel dull and over saturated (lachapelle pun intended lolll anyways) with so many different people doing the same thing over and over and over again.
It’s refreshing revisiting his work in print instead of on the tl. It made me realize that now, not many photographers i come across are using the medium to its full extent. Not many of them are as surrealistic as this in their approach to making art. Even me, oops (be the change you want to see Angel). Not saying that we should be replicating work from the past. I just miss grandeur and bizarre and think that over extravagant ideas in photography aren’t prominent in the art that I’m consuming right now. Maybe I’m not consuming enough (oh brother! how much more can i take oh Lord), but right now nothing is really pushing past the limitations of reality and it’s making life dull. to me
Art is the imitation of life so I guess right now, life calls for a reflection back to itself ??? so much nuance to this ofc, because there are many things happening in the world right now. I’m very privileged to experience dullness, as many people around the world are seeking and praying for that kind of peace.
ps, there’s many exciting art i’ve seen recently that actually speak to the darkness and light in me. and i’m thankful for that. I’ll speak more about them here #soon
