okay, so you have to understand it's half guard dog au and half 'minecraft mechanic based android' au.
during one of the torture sessions, c!quackity goes too far and c!dream's body is broken. c!sam begins creating a new body for dream (based on the fact that sam has been creating bodies for himself for apparently a long time) and then eventually transfers dream's mind into it. during this process, they decide to 'fix' dream. to reprogram him.
dream still has his memories somewhere, but they're locked away. all the lies people believe about him are now his truth (for example, that the prison was meant for c!tommy). they do attempt to use this break into his mind to get the revive book but all the information they access is complete gibberish to them, including when they ask dream directly. he tries to give them the information, because in this state he's willing to do whatever is asked of him, but physically cannot. it short circuits him, basically.
he is allowed out on the server, after making what's basically an apology tour where sam can show off how he 'fixed' dream. guarding las nevadas becomes part of his 'community service'. he works there during the day. he lives at sam's island. most people don't really think too much of it beyond the initial anger that he was out and then skepticism that he's not planning something. he's fitted with an enchanted collar that is part tracking device and part remote off switch.
sam and quackity still attempt to get the revive book from him (and kinda take out their anger on him because he doesn't remember) and the longer it goes on, the more unstable his programming becomes.
eventually dream does begin thinking something is wrong him. he thinks he's not real or that something has happened to him.
c!techno also thinks there's something wrong and has thought that from the beginning but since dream was telling him there wasn't, he didn't know what to do. dream isn't the kind of guy that would just... do that unless he had a plan so techno assumed that was the case. the longer it went on, though, the more techno thinks something is wrong.
the problem is, it's very hard for dream to GET help because he's always being monitored. when he expresses that he feels odd to techno one day, the next time they talk, he has a reason for it and brushes techno off when techno presses him. it goes on like that for a bit until there's a breakdown of the programming that DOES let dream get away, unknown, long enough for him and techno to figure out something has happened to his body and realize that they need to do something.
@blossomware I hope it’s okay if I answer your comment in a post. I thought it was a good point that other people might also find interesting.
So I do think you are on the right track, using shears means he can hit more which looks better for role play torture. In fact, it made me curious to see just how much more and the other differences between all the possible weapons which lead me down a path to make another table :)

So there are some interesting things to see here. First, apparently hoes and shears are not considered weapons, which I didn’t realize, and any non-weapon has the same stats as a fist. Which actually does make sense why Techno could take 53 hits from shears like how Dream and Tommy could punch each other so much even without many potatoes. According to my parameters (see note blow) I determined that you can be hit approximately 3 times with a non-weapon before needing to eat, which when dealing only a half a heart per a hit isn’t too bad. Also, there is speed to be considered, with mining fatigue it makes your hit slower and lessens how often you can hit someone, so using shears when trying to be fast and agressive makes sense. I mean Techno was running all over the cell and we see Dream do so in that visit too, and it’s really hard to hit someone with an axe when it’s slower and your aim is bad.
So than shears look better for roleplay, are way less accidentally fatal, are more potato efficient (which I’m sure Sam is happy about lol), faster and require less skill to use, and are also a cheap resource to make replacements for versus fancy weapons needing to mend or altogether replace. Overall, shears make a great torture weapon :]… (must be why Sam has them labeled Wardens Torment)…
Even further than it makes sense why Quackity would use the shears with Techno and not the diamond sword we see in the other visit, since Techno didn’t have his spawn set to the cell so to accidentally kill him would have been a big blunder. So shears it is. What’s also interesting is like I suspected, Techno was probably given baked potatoes before the visit on purpose because they give 3 hunger bars and 6 Saturation so he could take around an approximate 7 hits per a baked potato, which is roughly 6 more hits than Dream could take on raw potatoes. So outside of the life reason for taking more hits he is also far more able to take them than Dream…
Something to also notes, since it is implied that Quackity used a nethrite axe to the point of poor durability and each hit costs a lot of potatoes to heal, Dream was actually eating a lot of potatoes during the time of being tortured….
[note: this table is a little scuffed as some things are kinda hard to truly quantify when considering so many hypothetical scenarios. A lot of these factors depend on each other and I wasn’t about to make some long crazy table of every possible scenario that could happen. Like obviously certain enchantments on tools change the damage values but we don’t necessarily know what enchants were on his tools so I did the defaults, but also did mix in some stats of suspected tools [post] with tools I found in Quackity’s inventory. I also did only diamond and netherite since those are the only type we see him use but again who knows about offscreen. The most scuffed category is the potatoes because eating depends on so many factors: Hunger Bars, Exhaustion, Saturation, Health, and Time which is just too many things. I’m an engineer not a mathematician and actually solving something with that many changing unknowns I think would take a complicated series I suspect or something, I don’t know. I really did try though. What I ended up doing to get at least some kindanof number to compare is looking at how many potatoes it would take to heal back the health lost assuming Dream isn’t running around, starts at full 10 🍗 and excluding the effect of time and stuff. So given that 1 🥔 basically provides .5🍗 without enough Saturation to heal (.6 out of the 1.5 required to heal .5 ♥️), that means that basically it costs 1 🥔 (.5🍗) to heal every .5 ♥️. But since we are assuming Dream starts at 10 🍗 he can actually heal until he drops to 8.5 🍗 which means he can heal 1.5♥️ before eating his first potato.]
dream is a knight out of his depth. asked to act as a proxy for his king, he travels into the land of the king that his kingdom has been clashing with. it was supposed to be preliminary talks, a way for each country to see where concessions might be made. but it all goes terribly wrong. dragged from the dungeons, dream is left in the cursed forest surrounding the castle, an offering for the monster that stalks between the trees.
but against all odds, the monster spares him. and dream begins a relationship that will shape his future and show him what it is he truly wants from life.

Heh?… have you read my other posts? Or my fanfiction lol? cuz uhhh……. if you actually think that is what I was doing versus just revealing some interesting lore details then you are very mistaken. I mean the [post] I literally put up before reading this I hope alone highlights that.
Honestly, I was just annoyed the other night while making a fun prison arc montage when I noticed how I had way more clips of Techno being hurt by Quackity then I did of Dream.

I mean I hope you’re new around here because I’ve literally done analysis on which tools Quackity used [post] [post] [post] [post], I’ve compared the length of prison vs other big events [post] to point out how truly awful it was, I’ve compared visitors of exile and prison [post] to point out his isolation, I’ve written essays on the cruelty of prison here’s just one [post], I’ve put together a summary sheet and title detailing Dream’s stay in prison [post], I’ve looked at how many times Sam might have hit Dream [post], I’ve highlighted how abusive the cell in itself was [post] [post] especially for someone who’s autistic [post], I’ve noted how potions may not have been used [post], I even have a 15 chapter fanfiction [fic] dedicated to what I think could be plausible canon (and unhinged) torture visits, and I’ve posted a total of 28 prison arc torture scenes in my various works and on here... I mean I feel like the most blatant takeaway from my blog and fanfiction is that prison was such utter unjust cruelty.
And yes I do love looking at the lore and streams and finding cool details, but just because I’m pointing out interesting things from the few visits we get doesn’t mean I’m diminishing his torture or abuse. I’m just looking at the lore and sharing something I found while making a fun video. Now, I do think that Dream was stronger willed and such than is often portrayed [post], but that doesn’t mean I don’t think he hasn’t suffered. I’m just looking at the facts and they highlight how Dream tried to take weapons, accused, hit, shouted, and argued with his torturer from visit 1 to visit 83. So, just because he faces immense abuse and torture does not mean I think he is pathetic and I think that’s a fair assessment considering the lore we get, even if it is an unpopular one. But also, as I’ve pointed out before, we only get 3 scenes (2 of which are impartial), a few images, a montage, a few descriptions in dialogue of what happened in those 83 torture visits, not to mention what could have happened in the whole 314 days of the prison arc. So there are a lot of unknowns and a lot of implications and assumptions we can make…. anyways I digress…
I’d hardly say I’m obsessed with diminishing his abuse and torture, if anything I’d hope it’s obvious that I’m really obsessed with pointing out how horrible it was and noting ways how it was even worse than we realize. Of course, I see him as a valid victim, I’d even argue he is The victim. That to quote Techno:
“No man has ever suffered as much as Dream.” [clip]
“Let’s teach you some manners,” Quackity drawled. “How about ‘sir’?”
Clenching his fists, Dream somehow found the strength to laugh.
“How about fuck yourself?” he croaked.
And got several hard kicks to the jaw. Quackity paused briefly, breathing heavily—then resumed, hitting so fast Dream couldn’t count. His face became a bloody mess. Wounds from earlier visits reopened across his body.
