The Phantom Thieves sent their leader on a fucking suicide mission. they knew it was a 50/50 shot. there was so much doubt about whether or not it was going to work. but hey, it's not our asses on the table, so let's do it. akira does everything for everyone without a single complaint. goes out of his way in his freetime to do some of the shit to help his teammates. if there was a chance to keep his friends safe, he would face death itself

and he did. he fucking did. he just "ight i got this" into that situation. and in some cases HE DOES FUCKING DIE IF YOU CHOOSE THE WRONG ANSWERS. can you imagine how the phantom thieves would feel when they saw his suicide being announced on tv? alright in the anime it shows all of them being shocked, and after all that it cuts back to ryuji, who smiles and says "we got him" (referring to akechi obviously...and how they got him by their plan working)

but until akira walks through that door, they don't know he lived. the horror ryuji would feel knowing that he got his hopes up too fast :)
