I had a theory that the characters avatars somehow embody their traumas or insecurities; in Kinger's case, his role as one of the circus's founders

and it turns out that theory was right

especially considering the scene with the characters' nightmares, which further confirms this theory

For Gangle, it’s about suppressing her true, melancholic self in an effort to appear positive

For Zooble, it might be related to self-rejection or body image issues, or endless attempts to find what they might consider their calling
