Alfa Romeo Alfetta 1.8 “Raid Capo Nord Capo Sud,” 1973. During the summer of 1973 journalists from the Italian weekly motoring magazine Oggi resolved to test the then new Alfetta by driving it from the extreme tip of the European continent, North Cape in Norway, to the southern end of the African continent, the Cape of Good Hope, in South Africa. The Alfetta 1.8 was minimally modified with a large roof rack, bars to protect the radiator and an aluminium plate to preserve the oil pan. An additional air filter in oil bath was fitted to protect the engine from sand in the desert. Accessories and spare included 8 petrol cans, 3 spare wheels, tools and food adding up to an additional load of 500 kilograms, without the crew of 3. Distance traveled: 26057 km Daily average : 880,8 km Time taken: 29 days, 14 hours Average fuel consumption: 6.14 km/l Engine oil consumption: 1 litre of oil per 2895 km
