Happy first day of Inktober!! Unfortunately I’m not on vacation like last year, so I’m going to aim for one drawing a week rather than one a day. I decided to try out a theme this year! Inspired by Anna Cattish’s “girls” theme, I’m going to do portraits of females, only with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics theme) twist.
This first one’s a personal portrait, and it's on the type of girl I know best: the computer science girl. For some backstory, last year I graduated from a Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) graduate program where it was about 25% female, which is actually considered to be pretty high for CSE compared to the national average. And now I’m currently the only female iOS engineer at my company, out of about 25-30 iOS engineers. Sometimes it’s rough. I don’t always fit in and I often feel like I need to prove myself when I shouldn’t have to. But I love coding, it’s 100x more rewarding than it is frustrating (most days ;)) and I hope someday soon more girls can feel the same enjoyment that I do without having to deal with the same gender imbalance.
Anyway, went and picked up a few new ink pens this morning. I still suck at drawing hands (and the clothing ended up as an inky mess), but overall feel like I’ve learned a thing or two from last year! Happy Inktober everyone!
p.s. Yes, that’s actual Swift code in the background... but I wouldn’t try executing it :P
