The Arecibo message
The Arecibo message is a 1974 interstellar radio message carrying basic information about humanity and Earth sent to globular star cluster M13 in the hope that extraterrestrial intelligence might receive and decipher it. The message was broadcast into space a single time via frequency modulated radio waves at a ceremony to mark the remodeling of the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico on 16 November 1974. The message was aimed at the current location of M13 some 25,000 light years away because M13 was a large and close collection of stars that was available in the sky at the time and place of the ceremony. An audio representation of what it is like to have auditory hallucinations.
TRIGGER WARNING: there are people who experience Auditory Hallucinations on a regular basis and not only does it affect with the way they view themselves, but just to function and interact with these hallucinations happening is quite difficult in itself. For full affect, use headphones and imagine trying to listen and converse with someone with this in your head. Even just sitting and listening to these voices is pretty creepy and can hit you hard to even listen through. If you go through depression or struggles such as self-harm, low self-esteem, substance abuse or anything that affects your mental health such as these hallucinations, then please let someone know! Go for help! You’re not alone and recovery is real! Your life is valuable and you’re made for so much more. It’s ok to hurt. That means you’re alive! You can live and do things on your own, but know that people also need people. You matter. Get help. Take care of yourself. Don’t be afraid to lean on others when you find it hard to stand.
From what I’ve learned from other paranoid schizophrenics, sometimes the voices are not this clear - it can sound a lot like overhearing a distant conversation at the neighbor’s house, or like whispering, and you can’t really make out what’s being said - but it can still be incredibly frustrating to deal with, especially since it makes focusing and sleeping rather difficult, and you can’t ever tune it out with music or cover your ears to block it out. You just have to ride it out, basically. It takes a lot of psychological resilience and therapy (like CBT) and medication to deal with this.
But yeah, in the western world, most people that experience auditory hallucinations say that when they can make out what’s being said, it’s usually very negative, sometimes even cruel, telling them to harm themselves and such. It can prey on your repressed emotions and fears quite often. IHaveSchizophrenia on YouTube (I highly recommend his channel) said that he even heard straight screaming for a couple of minutes every day for a while - and then it just went away. It’s different from person to person, really. Every single person with schizophrenia experiences it differently. I’ve also learned that auditory hallucinations are the most common form of hallucinations (and not everyone with schizophrenia hallucinates, by the way). But yeah, it’s really no joke. It takes a lot of mental fortitude to overcome this internal battle, so please be kind and don’t create an external battle for them on top of it. Stigma makes dealing with this illness MUCH harder, especially because many often internalize that stigma and think of themselves as monsters and don’t ask for help or reach out because of it - so please be understanding and kind. Showing love and consideration and just treating other people like human beings can do far more good than you might ever even realize.
