They go quiet for a long time. Then look at you as if waiting for the catch... They lower their voice:
"You... made this? L-like for me?"
A pause. They blink rapidly and you can't tell if they're about to cry or laugh. It comes out as both at once.
"That's... hah... that's stupid. Why would you..."
They don't finish. Their hands wipe their face too roughly, like they're angry at their own tears.
"...Nobody ever made anything for me before... hmph..."
They look pretty conflicted...
He listens in silence, to the very end, no reaction on his face. When it's over, he tilts his head slightly, as if considering.
"Could it be said... that you dedicated a song to me?"
He smiles quietly as usual, tilting his head slightly like an owl.
"I think I'll save this for repeated listening. I don't suppose you'd mind."
She stands straight and listens with a blank face.
"...You do realize we have more pressing things to deal with."
She listens more closely.
Having listened to the end, Saphira sharply turns her head, hiding her face behind her bangs and her hand, as if trying to keep you from seeing her. You hear her voice crack slightly.
"Th-that's... uh, it's nothing."
She takes a shaky breath, trying to regain her composure.
"It's a beautiful song... Thank you, Y/N."
Her mouth opens before the song even finishes.
"OH MY GOD. Oh my god oh my god oh my god—"
She grabs your shoulders.
"Wait. WAIT. Is this actually for me?! Like, not ironically?! Not as a joke?!"
You confirm. She lets go of your shoulders and takes a step back. Her eyes are glistening.
"...Nobody's ever... not like— huh..."
One second. Then as if nothing happened, she shakes her head and puts her smirk back on.
"I KNEW IT! I KNEW I was star material! Play it again. PLAY IT AGAIN, pleeeasee!"
She listens with the same composure she listens to everything with. When it ends, silence. Then softly:
"...Did you write the words yourself?"
You answer. The corner of her mouth lifts slightly.
"It's nice. I like that it doesn't try too hard... my ears get to rest when I listen."
A pause. She looks past you somewhere, and her eyes go a little softer than usual.
He smiles. You know that polite smile of his.
"Wow, that's... that's really thoughtful. Seriously."
He rubs the back of his neck. Doesn't know where to put himself, blushing slightly, coughing into his fist.
"I'm not gonna lie, I'm terrible with stuff like this... that's way too sweet, really."
"But I mean it. Thank you. It's... been a while since someone thought of me as something other than the guy who keeps everyone in line, hah."
Her eyes are wet before it's even halfway through.
"Oh no. Oh no no no, don't look at me, I'm gonna—"
She covers her face with her hands.
"This is so unfair. You can't just do that to people, you know!"
She uncovers her face, and you can see a huge smile, tears, everything at once.
"I felt every single note... I don't even know how you pulled that off...!"
She presses her fist to her chest. Then suddenly hugs you tightly without warning, burying her face in your shoulder.
"You have no idea how much this means. No idea..."
He leans back, puts his hands behind his head.
"Well, well, well. A private concert? Didn't see that coming!"
He raises an imaginary glass.
"I'd rate it a solid seven. The melody's got legs, but the bridge needs work. Also, you sharp on the—"
He stops. You can see he's nitpicking on purpose so he doesn't show how much it got to him. He knows it and you know it. He snorts and looks away, scratching his chin — visibly flustered.
"...Okay, fine. It's an eight. Maybe eight and a half... Yes."
"Oh my. A song? For little old me...???"
"I have to say, in all my years of running these... events... no one has ever tried to serenade the management... you must be special!"
The tone drops lower, as if for a second something else shows through the mask. Or maybe you only thought so.
