Water Changes Everything
How We'll Get to 10,000
In order to get to 10,000 Kevins this year, I'll need to get over 100 Kevins to sign the petition every three days for the rest of the year.
That's huge. So huge that it'll be impossible to accomplish that goal unless this project goes viral. Quite honestly, it has to become a national phenomenon.
How do you get people who don't even know you to want to spread your idea?
Have a good idea. 10,000 Kevins isn't ultimately about me. It's about charity. And having a ridiculous goal of getting him to take me to dinner is enough to get attention. Most of the time I tell people for the first time, they laugh. That's a good sign!
Make it simple. We're getting 10,000 Kevins to sign a petition so Kevin Bacon will take me to dinner. To get there, I'm seeking 10 companies to each donate $10,000 to 10 charities. That means in essence, every Kevin who signs will be giving $10 to charity.
Make people valuable. If you know that every Kevin who signs this petition will be getting $10 to charity, wouldn't you share it (even if you didn't know me)? Wouldn't the press want to report on it? I think so.
That's the latest update! My next step is to find ten charities to donate $10,000 each to. I'm looking for charities that are financial efficient and transparent, that everyone can get behind, and that companies would donate to. And while I'm at it. I'm looking for companies who would be willing to donate $10,000 to them. Can you suggest any?
Thanks for your help!
Will this Kevin sign my 10,000 Kevins petition?
I bet he would, if he doesn't forget!

Spreading the Word: The People I'm Looking For
As you might imagine, getting 10,000 Kevins to sign an online petition is an insane goal. 1,000 is ambitious, but sane. 10,000 is insane. It's a number so high that it cannot possibly be achieved through the networking of one person. The project has to go viral. It has to be a national phenomenon. There is no other way.
I set it up that way on purpose.
Yet when I tell people about the project I mostly hear, "I think I can get some Kevins for you." Wait! Let's do some math. Getting 10,000 Kevins in ten months gives us 300 days. So every three days I need 100 Kevins. I'm glad you know some Kevins, but I don't just need people; I need propagators. Though I've explained this before, it's been a month now and that mindset hasn't caught on.
Finally tonight I came to an epiphany: I'm working too hard. Why I am I trying to change the thinking of masses of people? Why not reach the few people who already think like me? People who dream big dreams and make them happen. You can call them entrepreneurs. I call them visionaries. They set huge goals and figure out how to get there. They have huge networks of people they inspire. And here's the best part: they love projects like these.
The people I met at Charity: Water last week were among them. They brimmed with excitement like me at wanting to reach this goal, and offered me practical ways to get there. I left that office with a fire of renewed energy. I don't think I've ever felt such great encouragement in my whole life. It's one thing for a person to say they support you. It's another to give you a shout-out to their friends. But it's a completely different realm of support when they get in the ring with you, using their time, expertise, and connections to get you where you need to be.
Those are the kinds of people I'm looking for.
A birthday story: meet Lory.
I've always loved charity: water. They fulfill a great need and in doing so, save countless lives.
This Thursday I met Scott Harrison, founder of charity: water. He's inviting me back to the offices next week to see how I can promote their cause.
Project Steve Got 1200 Signatures
NSCE got over 1200 scientists named Steve to sign their statement, but it took them three-and-a-half years.
Can the 10,000 Kevins project get 10,000 Kevins to sign in just ten months? I dunno, spread the word and we'll find out!
"You put Kevin Bacon in a closet."
THIS Kevin would sign my petition. You can too!

Does a Kavin count?
Last night, a guy named Kavin reached out to me to be included in the petition. We accepted Keven, a woman with a spelling variation, but her named was still pronounced "Kevin". Here's Kavin's defense:
As a hardcore Kevin Bacon fan i think [10,000 Kevins] is brilliant.. I hope I count as a "Kevin" haha. I mean Kevin Bacon and I have the same initials too! So that should count for something right? lol
Also Kevin and Kavin mean the same thing in their respective origins which is "handsome". True story..
What do you think? Does he count as a Kevin?
Introducing Kevin #50: Keven Palmer!
Say hello to Keven Palmer. She has the privilege of being the first female Kevin on the list, the first Kevin to have a variation on the spelling of "Kevin", and she's Kevin #50!
Here's what she has to say about the 10,000 Kevins petition:
My daughter shared the idea with me. Also while growing up I had many opportunities to get involved in community fundraisers as well as high school fundraisers. One of my favorite ones were the jump rope-a-thon for one of our classmates whose family lost everything to a house fire. We jumped all night long. We took turns resting and jumping in the high school gym. The other one of my favorites are the March of Dimes. I love people and currently my field of study is social work in the Behavioral Science field. The Bonus is I'm a female and my name is Keven and I thought it would be real fun to have my name added. I am the only female Keven I know.
On a different note I love the movie the air up there. Kevin Bacon so promise in ayoung man and gave him a chance to use his basketball skills. As a Social Worker this is our goal to allow others potential to surface to the top in order for the individual to be able to operate in their personal gifts.
Thank you for allowing me to express my feelings in terms of the positive venture you are on. I also want to thank my daughter for reccomending I get involved. I never know what she'll come up with next. Keep pressing toward the mark Dave and Amber.
Sincerely,
Miss Keven Palmer
