Last week, Palestinian nonprofit the Welfare Association for Youth announced the results of its 2014 photography contest called âGaza in Your Eyes.â Out of hundreds of submissions, 13 young people were named winners. Each of their photos is strikingly different, but they all manage to capture the perseverance of beauty and hope against a backdrop of destruction.
this makes my heart smile with joy
june 20 is world refugee day. consider that almost half of the worldâs 43 million forcibly displaced people are children, and many spend their entire childhoods far from home and without access to basic education.Â
they are also at a greater risk of abuse, neglect, violence, exploitation, trafficking or forced military recruitment, and may also have witnessed or experienced violent acts and/or been separated from their families. nevertheless, children are highly resilient and find ways to cope, particularly from the kinds of play that all children enjoy.
these photos are from refugee camps outside of islamabad, home to well over a million displaced afghan children (registered and unregistered); and from jordanâs zaatari refugee camp, home to some of the more than one million displaced syrian children.Â
they were taken by (click pic) mohammed muheisen, greg baker, daniel berahulak, jeff j mitchell, pedro ugarte, faisal mahmood, nathalie bardou, emilio morenatti and mohammad sajjad.Â
