Kimi had done it.
The initial nerves had quickly faded away as he settled into the familiar rhythm of the race, once all he felt was the car and the track. An unfortunate race for many drivers to be sure, but he was unfazed by it all and here he stood on the podium as the winner.
Overwhelming giddiness, the usual rush he got after finishing first, filled him as he stood there. Thoughts swam through his head of his family, his friends, youā¦
Youād seen him win.
He was listening to his national anthem, but all he could hear was your voice congratulating him. Youād be smiling right now, maybe even cheering for him while you watched him stand there. A big smile started creeping onto his face and he licked his lips slightly to stop it from going any further. Luckily his helmet squished his ears tight for a long time so they had an excuse to be red, otherwiseā
Well, anyway. It was time to dump champagne on Toto⦠and consider booking a plane ticket.
ā
It was a quiet Thursday night after work, your roommate was out, and you decided to go to bed since there was nothing else to do for the evening.
Youād just settled in when you felt the breeze come in your window a little bit colder than you liked. The evening was cooling off as the sun went down and, mercifully, it wasnāt nearly as hot as the day had been. But that meant you had to drag yourself out of the comfortable position youād been in under your blankets to shut the windowā¦
Just as you got up, a loud notification vibrated your phone.
And another.
And another.
You reached for your phone, frowning at whoever was texting you at this hour.
Hi.
Just got off the plane
Here
ā¦from Kimi? The text went in and out of focus as your eyes went impossibly wide. Kimi?! The man who was in Monaco less than 2 days ago? Your fingers couldnāt move across the keyboard fast enough to send a response.
???????Are you sure you have the right number????
Before you could even begin typing your next message, there was a knock at the door.
There was absolutely no way heād been serious. Neither of you had talked since Sunday, the day of the race. Youād congratulated him and he thanked you and talked about seeing you sometime. That had been the extent of the conversation.
Window long forgotten, you practically ran out of your room and down the hall to the door, and the second you opened it, you were enveloped in a crushing Kimi-hug. Of course, you hugged him back with as much force as you could muster, hoping you knocked the breath out of him as much as he did to you.
Nothing was said for a moment, and you existed as two people just basking in each otherās presence for a few precious seconds; not a thought of anyone or anything else.
Until he started strangling you.
āHey! Kimi!ā You gasped out, āLet me breathe!ā
He kept his stranglehold for a few more seconds before letting go and allowing you to wheeze breath back into your lungs. His grin was too big for it not to be contagious, and you found yourself smiling back at him.
āHey.ā
āHey, Kimi.ā
Sunset might as well have been reflecting off his face with the way his eyes shone and his smile got even bigger.
āWhat did you think?ā
āI already told you in my message,ā he rolled his eyes at your words, āā¦Okay. You did so good. Happy?ā
He nodded his head and leaned forward as if he was about to tell you a secret, āWant to know how I did it?ā
āTell me.ā
āI thought about you the whole time.ā
Yeah, it had always been inevitable. There was no way in the world you could have ever resisted falling for him.
āKimiāā you began quietly, but he cut you off.
āSo, can I come in?ā
This was it. Right now, you were all too aware of what would happen if you let him in your house. Something was going to drastically changeā in all aspects of your life. Were you going to do it?
Of course. Who were you kidding?
āCome in.ā

Thereās no way heāll win in Monaco.
He didnāt perform well in Monaco last year, so why would he now?
Shooting down the track, the car thrummed under Kimiās feet. Vibrating with almost the same intensity as the beat of his heart, knowing the stakes. So much was at risk.
Doubts had formed in the back of his mind throughout the whole weekend and now, in the actual race, they were all coming to the front. He needed to focus and yet his mind was pulling him every which way. It was all he could do to keep his hands steering correctlyā muscle memory was the only thing between him and a nice visit into the barrier, especially in a race that required this much focus.
Well. Maybe not. Kimi knew he was a good driver, and he had enough confidence to maintain his position while making those turns without too much fear of crashing; it was his distractedness that was making him nervous.
After all, you were watching this race.
I know youāll win, Kimi.
Youād watched his other races too, sure, but something was different about this one specifically. Maybe it had something to do with the visit heād paid you last week after his win in Canada and the unexpected thoughts that came after? Maybe it had something to do with the feelings that brewed over the following week? Maybe it had something to do with the way his head felt like it was going to explode right now just thinking about it?
He could not lose. He would not lose. Heād prove to you thatā¦
That what? Why did he need to prove himself to you?
ā¦the answer was something he didnāt even want to consider right now, and his mind was forcing him to at the most inconvenient time.
āFocus, Kimi.ā
Had he been so obviously distracted it showed in his driving? And warranted a message from his team?
Of course, they were right. He gritted his teeth in frustration⦠and also to prevent anything stupid coming from his mouth. There was no way he was losing this race.
I know youāll win, Kimi.
Focus, Kimi.
He could not lose this race.
i wish i could watch the race live tmrw but i have places to be šššš
