Discovered this video via @austinkleon’s amazing weekly newsletter.
Among the highlight moments for me was his comment: “There’s some sort of beautiful symmetry that the degree to which we connect to a community is in proportion to our individuality.” It is also a wonderful deconstruction of his own creative process and how the content is shaped by the context.
Not every win is epic. Each day you tackle tons of small tasks and overcome mini and not so many obstacles. Each day you can make progress toward bigger achievements. That progress should be recognized. Doing so will help you to stay motivated to complete larger goals and will aid in developing better habits.
Today’s mission is to celebrate a small win and, if possible, capture yourself doing the celebration. That could mean giving yourself a high-five when you cross that icky item off of your to do list first thing, or standing up and saying “Go Me” after you solve a problem, or just finding a fun GIF that displays how you feel about your accomplishment.

its almost as if giving people harmless outlets for their aggression allows people who use that outlet to vent safely as part of their coping process, imagine that. perhaps we should be encouraging people who need to vent that they should actually go vent instead of telling them that safe venting is socially unacceptable this is similar to when people were blaming edgy music- listening to depressing songs will not cause depression nor cause someone to kill themselves, but listening to them while writing bad poetry and wearing stylish yet regrettable outfits may allow someone to work through an emotional time in their life better then listening to equally embarrassing in hindsight pop music its entirely possible ‘Doom’ prevented someone with anger issues from killing someone, its entirely possible ‘suicide solution’ by ozzy has prevented suicides let people have safe outlets for their emotions
Yo my psychiatrist encourages me to play video games when I’m dealing with PTSD related rage episodes. She’s told me that it’s one of the safest ways to decompress and sort my shit out. And you know what? She’s right. By the end of an hour or so I’m chill again and can get on with my day. The alternative is doing real physical harm to myself via punching a wall or slamming my head into something. Video games negate that urge.

While this article is positioned more for learnings in K-12, finding ways for learners of all ages to have autonomy is a powerfully motivating. I love the idea of giving learners a limited number of hints, whether that happens through cards, chips, or as I experienced last month in the Escape Room activity at GamiCon, beer coaster.
By giving each team in the Escape Room activity two coasters that could be traded in for hints, I can tell you that something really interesting happened. We spent a lot of time formulating our questions. There was much deeper thought than likely would have taken place if we could have asked as many questions as we wanted. The scarcity of available hints got us really digging into what we needed to know to move forward.
Learning hasn't changed over the years. It's in the doing and trying and failing. And, hey look, I made jelly.

First, I believe that a diverse work force brings creative and innovative ideas and perspectives to our games and business, and that gamers benefit directly by having highly inclusive development teams. Second, I believe there exists an unconscious or hidden bias in our human nature that works against inclusivity in the work place," he noted.
The quote touches on a couple of key ideas. The first is the type of environment that triggers innovation which is so central to any type of job that requires creative thinking. As Linus Pauling said: “The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas.” Having more voices ... more different voices ... is crucial to innovating in a way that serves a diverse population.
The second idea is the even harder one to tackle. Unconscious biases are difficult for the very reason that they are, well, unconscious. But it is possible to help people become more aware of the fact that they have them and that there are proactive ways to counterbalance them.
As the article starts out stating, progress is slow. The demographics of game designers hasn’t changed as much over the past 10 years as many would like but there is progress. Slow and steady wins the race but last one in’s a rotten egg.
Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity.

I spent time last week discussing various gamification ideas with like-minded folks at the USDLA conference and one of the issues I brought out was the need for game elements like badges to have meaning to the learners (users/players/pick your own descriptor). Arriving back at work I came across an email that referenced Dr. Y’s tweet and it was just perfect. This is what badges should be - an accomplishment shrine. Love this!

Behaviors don’t just spring out of the air, they form around a foundation like a pearl, layer upon layer. This was just one of the great images from Nir Eyal’s talk at the GSummit. A short piece based on his work in Hooked: How to build habit-forming products. Another great analogy was the idea of pain killers versus vitamins. Are you creating something that solves the pain, cures the itch or something that might be good for you but doesn’t solve an immediate need.
He asked the audience to imagine that there was an unread email waiting for them in their inbox and asked how they felt. Anxious was the first response. With a simple suggestion, the audience was primed with the itch to check their email. We have developed that habit over years of checking our mail and feeding the social need it serves. Habits require frequency and eventually will turn into things we do without much thought but that cause us a bit of “pain” or stress when we don’t do them.
As usual I was watching this through the lens of learning and thinking about ways that we can encourage others to form a habit of learning such that not feeding their curiosity causes that nagging little itch to dig in again.
