I cannot stress enough how important it is to speak up for yourself when someone is crossing your boundaries or dismissing your feelings. You are your biggest advocate. No one else can read your mind or feels what you feel.

āThe clichĆ© that when women are liberated men will be liberated too shamelessly slides over the raw reality of male domination ā as if this were an arrangement in fact arranged by nobody, which suits nobody, which works to nobodyās advantage. In fact, the very opposite is true. The domination of men over women is to the advantage of men; the liberation of women will be at the expense of male privilege. Perhaps afterwards, in some happy sense, men will be liberated too ā liberated from the tiresome obligation to be āmasculine.ā But allowing oppressors to lay down their psychological burdens is quite another, secondary sense of liberation. The first priority is to liberate the oppressed. Ā Never before in history have the claims of oppressed and oppressors turned out to be, on inspection, quite harmonious. It will not be true this time either.ā

My therapist told me something meaningful yesterday, she said āItās important to remember that when youāre depressed you have to nurse yourself and be extra gentle towards yourself. Just like an athlete wouldnāt break an ankle then force themselves to run that ankle. They rest as it heals and do not think āI am a failed atheleteā they think, āright now something isnāt working so iāll take care of myself until it does.āĀ
Just like a broken bone, depression can change the way your daily life plays out, and pushing yourself too hard and getting frustrated when you donāt feel better is just like trying to run on that broken ankle and getting frustrated when it doesnāt heal.
