The flash alarmed him. It came with the familiar sound of a shutter. The last time a photo was socially taken of him was at Thanksgiving ten years ago. During heists, the cameras are turned away. Never catching anything more than a blind spot. If anyone happened to catch a photo of him it was usually a blur. An unmemorable stranger with less than a profile to go on. This was his way of disappearing. For the first time in many years, someone caught him off guard. “Delete that.” he resisted the urge to slap the camera out of her hands. The tone in his voice was steady. Not trying to sound like a dick yet making his words perfectly clear. “It’s rude to take photos of strangers.”

before roman became thirteen he was an architect. made money from rich people who wanted elaborate homes with hidden rooms for who knows what. they paid him well so he didn’t ask.
all his life he had been fascinated with buildings. why hallways were a certain width. how many rooms were deemed appropriate for an average home. maybe he should have foreseen his future as a jewel thief.
his whole reason for going down the slippery slope of the heist world was his sibling. they fell in with the wrong people and wound up owing a debt. with no other option they turned to big bro roman. he was the key to pulling off several heists that would get them enough money to pay off their debt.
what roman never expected was to like it. occasionally it meant getting his hands dirty. his sibling screwed many people over in their day. which meant there was an unwanted target on his back. together they ran the heist game before roman tapped out. he loved the life of riches and crime yet it wasn’t what he wanted to do forever.
his sibling told him about a lawless city called santa ysabel. he could run away without getting caught. he’d be able to live a life free from the world of heist. is that what he really wanted? thirteen couldn’t answer that question. still can’t.
