As a director, if you assemble the actors you love, and if you’re shooting in a place you like, and you have a great cinematographer, and all that stuff, and I did, essentially the director is the one person on the set who would not have to do anything... Now what a director really does is set the emotional temperature and the mood and the level, amount, or lack of, distance between the action and the character, and the character and the audience.

New York's Department of Records has set up an online gallery for over 870,000 previously unseen photos of the city, spanning over 100 years. Collected from a vast database of photographs taken by various municipal workers, we see the city and its inhabitants grow, thrive and perish. (via Daily Mail)

Beck and McSweeney's have teamed up to release the ultimate crowd-sourced music project - an album consisting only of sheet music for 20 original Beck songs, never before released or recorded. The sheet music, with individually rendered artwork for each track, encourages the public to create their own version of the album, the best of which will be published on McSweeney's website (along with hundreds of YouTube channels one imagines). The December release promises to be one of the most innovative artist releases in years. (via McSweeney's)
Saatchi & Saatchi recently announced the winner of their James Brown Music Video Challenge, which asked people to create an original music video for one of his tracks that doesn't already have an official video. Xavier Fauthoux's winning entry for 'It's a Man's Man's Man's World' does justice to both the song and the Godfather of Soul's life with a beautiful retelling of his rise from the cotton fields of South Carolina to be one of the most dynamic and influential artists of the 20th Century. Which reminds us... why hasn't there been a biopic of The Hardest Working Man In Show Business yet? Surely that role is Oscar bait par excellence. (via Co.Create)

The Daily Mail has published a collection of photos taken by a 17 year-old Stanley Kubrick, capturing 1947 Manhattan as Look magazine's youngest staff photographer. Even at such a young age, his ability to compose vivid images is well and truly on display.
Abduzeedo is currently hosting a terrific gallery of minimalist user-created movie posters, courtesy of Minimal Movie Posters. Fan-made posters have for the last few years generally been much more creative and imaginative than official studio one-sheets, which tend to favour floating heads over artistry. Let's hope sites like these, and the phenomenal success of Mondo's posters change that.

As promised, here's a gander at our latest video, a promo piece for UNICEF Australia's Day For Children, starring renowned children's author Morris Gleitzman. It's a day where Aussie school students are encouraged to raise money to give kids around the world their right to education. You can find out more at their official website.

This astonishing, epic music video for Justice's latest single 'New Lands' is as fully realised a music vid as we've seen in many moons. The work of Barcelona-based collective CANADA, it's like the climactic battle of a late '70s/early '80s sci-fi sports movie. Think Rollerball by way of Tron, Death Race and Escape From New York.
This Oscar-nominated short, 'Tanghi Argentini', was directed by Belgian Guido Thys in 2006, and remains one of the best short films we've seen in the last 10 years. Beautifully constructed, it's funny and engaging for its full running time, and has a terrific ending. It's on the longer end of shorts at 13 mins, but well worth your time.
