How to Keep Characters Consistent

Writing a novel can take a long time, so how do you make sure your characters stay consistent? While there are reasons why a character might act out-of-character, inconsistencies can possibly ruin your novel and make figuring out how to fix your novel a living hell. 

Here are a few ways to make sure your characters remain consistent:

Keep Track

Make sure you jot down everything important that happens to your character. If it helps, keep a timeline. If you stop writing for a few weeks or tend to forget certain events, keeping track is a must. I usually keep a notebook so I can jot down what’s happened and what I plan on happening. It also helps when you get stuck.

Write an Extensive Character Outline

In addition to the timeline, you’ll want to know your characters inside and out. You’ll want to know how they react to certain events or what sets them off, etc. Fill out character sheets or write them in different situations until you feel like you fully understand what they’re about. Don’t be afraid to experiment with ideas.

There are tons of character sheets out there, so try to find some that suit your writing style.

Always Know Wants/Motivations/Needs

Your character will always want something. They’ll have needs. And they’ll need to have motivations that drive them forward. A character can feel unmotivated, but there must be something they’re striving for (or maybe they’re looking for motivation). Once you know these things and realize they’re ever-changing, you’ll be able to keep your character consistent. 

Know What Would Break Them

Characters can act out-of-character, but there’s usually a reason for it. It makes sense in your story. You need to be able to identify what would break them or why they would act in a strange way. Know what would be the last straw for them or what they would do to save someone they loved. This will help give your character depth.

Focus on Where the Story is Going

Knowing your story is sometimes just as important as knowing your characters. Sure, characters can drive the story in unexpected directions, but you should have some idea or some outline of your novel. If you don’t, you might end up with an unorganized mess. Think about your story and where you want it to go. Your characters will add those unexpected twists to it.
