i wanted to reserve judgment on this until actually watching it as part of the full narrative of the episode again but i’ve heard before that people think the criticism of kurt’s audition for a solo at sectionals at dalton is unfair. and on the one hand, i get it’s sorta frustrating — the writing toyed with the idea of kurt getting one in nd by having will say he had an idea for kurt for a solo at sectionals RIGHT before kurt announced he was transferring so it never really narratively was going to happen. the writing sorta gets to Say they’re gonna do it without any intent of follow through. which is genuinely frustrating if you care about his character, which i do!

(the rest of this is even putting aside also that while they invited kurt for a solo as a show of good faith, he was probably a lot less likely to get one just by nature of having Just transferred and barely practiced with them. i think a more realistic show probably would have had them wait for him to perform with them until after sectionals but i get why the show as it exists can’t really do that.)

anyway, narrative frustrations aside, i think, based on kurt’s audition, it makes sense kurt doesn’t get it? i’ve seen it said before that the warblers just didn’t appreciate an authentic emotional performance but i don’t think that’s it. like, the show (to me) intentionally writes him as not really internalizing what rachel tells him about picking something much more personal to himself? like she said that and then he immediately picks the song she sang as an example. that feels a little telling. sure, they have similar tastes in some areas, but why This song at This moment for Him, yk?

and it’s not that kurt doesn’t sound good! he genuinely does! but i do think there’s an element of this actually not being a very in-depth emotional authentic performance, but instead kind of… playing at one? compare this to “as if we never said goodbye” and the difference to me is Staggering.

and i know some have gripes with blaine (upon being asked his advice) say “don’t try so hard” and “if all you care about is getting noticed you’re never gonna make it with the warblers”. but i don’t think he means don’t put effort in or don’t care or don’t stand out? YMMV on this but that particular performance feels less like kurt’s being truly emotional and more like he’s trying to Prove how good and emotional he can be - which reads different, and i think what blaine’s trying to say is that’s how it came across and that it was holding him back a little. whether not one agrees with that mindset, i do think it makes sense with showing how blaine thinks about music and with how the warblers function.

(i think it doesn’t help that it’s a good song but sectionals doesn’t really feel like the right setting for it.) (in fairness neither does candles but that’s later)

#my PoV is that still in Special Education Kurt (and Blaine) are the B plot #the A plot in Finchel/Quinn and Rachel being the star of the glee club which deflects from how awful her love life is #so choice of DCFMA as solo was for Rachel’s plot #and tie it up with Kurt havent to do a solo as well #so Kurt’s effectively propping up Rachel’s plot #he wanted to sing My heart will go on #which isn’t everyone’s choice - I don’t love it - but #I’d have given anything to hear him sing that line #“love can touch you one time and last for a lifetime #Also this was the second time we’ve seen Blaine #and the whole Blaine gets the solos-chooses-it’s in Blaine’s key etc #is spinning a narrative about him #his ability as frontman #and loved by the Warblers #giving Kurt a potential boyfriend as fantastic as he is #none of the ND men can match him vocally #So even though he was great #he’d never have been chosen as soloist - Nick and Jeff had been trying for a long time #Then when they do give him his big solo moment in AIWNSG in 2.18 he is amazing #and you can see the rest of the ND (cast’s) genuine reactions #a huge thing is made about his return to MCK.#glee #special education #Kurt Hummel
