The Avengers, pioneers of the early West Coast punk scene, photographed here by James Stark back in 1977, in one of their legendary blazing live performances, which seemingly doesn’t end even after they play dead, as the audience steps in to keep strumming the guitars.

The punk rockers who opened for The Sex Pistols’ final gig at Winterland, were one of the first and finest bands to emerge from San Francisco’s punk scene, as well as a major inspiration in a scene that flourished long after they broke up, fronted by singer Penelope Houston, one of the pioneering women of American punk.
