summary:

Jonny's senior year of high school is supposed to be about one thing and one thing only: hockey and getting ready for the NHL.

Moving to Buffalo shouldn't complicate any of that, but meeting Patrick Kane, co-captain of the high school cheer team, definitely changes things.

In fact, meeting Patrick Kane changes everything.

hey, y’all! I know it’s been a while and I’m really sorry about that!

life has been crazy, not only for me but for a lot of you as well, I can imagine. I had very exciting plans for this fest but, along the way, things changed and I needed to keep goals a little more realistic. 

as more and more writers let me know they would’t be able to continue participating in the fest (mostly because of the deadline), i started to think of what I could do to still make this worth it and interesting for writers and fans. 

this is what I have come up with:

I created a collection of works on AO3 so that any person who ever writes a 1988 fic inspired by a folklore song can add the story to it and they’ll all be kept together somewhere. this collection will be open forever so that whenever someone finishes or posts a story they can add it to the collection. 

there is no limit to the amount of stories one can add, no word count minimum or maximum… there are no rules at all except one: the story has to be a patrick/jonny fic and it has to be at least somewhat inspired by folklore, a song on it, or multiple songs on it.

THIS IS THE LINK TO THE AO3 COLLECTION 

it’s now open for whoever wants to use it and I, myself, will be posting on it soon as i would have if the fest had run its normal course. I am excited to see the stories you all come up with <3

in a sense, this fest is now yours. forever and evermore.

i didn’t write in the sprint today but here’s a little snippet from my last great american dynasty au for @1988folklorefest!  obviously this is still wildly unedited but i hope everyone enjoys!

Jonny was obsessed with his teeth. A year of many ups and downs, mostly downs has brought him to this point. Obsessing over his best friend and team mate’s dental work. If someone, anyone had told him before he went on LTIR that he’d be coming out of it, recovered from his head injury but having picked up a weird fetish that involved Patrick Kane of all people, he would have called them crazy.

Yet here he is now, his physically fine but emotionally impaired brain looping on thoughts of what his unsuspecting friend. He knows the exact moment these intrusive thoughts started appearing. He remembers the calm season before the storm that rages inside him now kicked off in full force. He had been on LTIR, incapacitated and stuck at home for the first time since he was a pre-teen. Not allowed TV or the phone to distract him, he had for the first time in over a decade to face his own thoughts without any opportunity to get away from them through physical exertion or the distraction offered by entertainment. He always knew he relied on the highs of endorphins rush and lows of physical exhaustion offered by hockey for his mental stability but he never realized just how much thinking he avoided by having his entire life so absorbed in hockey.

Being immobile like that had forced him to pay attention to what was actually going on in his life. In the beginning it had been weird, Mel wasn’t used to having him around 24/7. Jonny tried to stay out of his way, not disturb “his process” too much. He knew that just because he was at home and bored, Mel couldn’t just drop what he was doing and be available to keep Jonny company.

Jon had tried to occupy his mind with reading, he went through all the books on leadership and self improvement he had had on his “to read” list for the past few years. Working towards two Stanley cups in three years had kept him well and busy and he hadn’t been able to read as much as he used to when he was younger and a newly appointed captain. So he made it through The Power of Habit, which was just a reaffirmation of everything he already knew and was practising, he was a professional athlete. Of course he knew the value of habits. Then he tackled The 4 Hour Body next, and when he didn’t find any mind-altering facts there his attention began to drift and he couldn't get back into reading again. Maybe he needs better recommendations, but he couldn’t very well get on the internet and look up reviews, yep being concussed really sucks.

NOTES: We can’t believe we’ve finished the recs for the standard version of the album. 16 fics for 16 songs, wow. These last recs were some of the first ones that came to mind when compiling the list, actually. The second rec (the one for peace) is a little unorthodox because it’s a WIP and I (your mod @thathockey) know a little bit of how the fic continues and how the plans for it go, and I can just promise you it’s made perfectly for peace and it’s going to be so worth it if you start reading it.
