Hanahaki disease
Henri chooses to have surgery to cure her of the hanahako disease but it doesn’t work
Henri stares in horror at the specialist-the extremely expensive and private specialist whose waitlist extended in to the years.
“How can that be?” Henri asks, her throat feels raw and not just because she’s just had surgery.
“We’re not sure,” the specialist says succinctly.
Henri leans back into her seat, completely shattered. She’d done everything right. She’d caught the Hanshaki disease early -she’d been the perfect candidate for the operation. The operation that was 100 per cent successful. How could it have failed her.
“I thought I met all the critea,” Henri says and the specialist nods,
“You do. You did everything right, you can, of course, get a second opinion but might I suggest you tell your…intended, how you feel?”
Henry wants to laugh but her throat muscles were still weak from the surgery. Tell Alex? The idea was preposterous. Alex hated her and everything she stood for. Alex was beautiful and vivid and thriving, and progressive everything Henry could never be. She could never love Henri, it was so absurd even in her wildest daydreams she couldn’t come up with a fantasy where Alex reciprocated her feelings.
She’d braced herself for the surgery working-for having the warmth thinking of Alex gave her withering away into nothing, for no longer feeling electric and alive when Alex looked at her. She’d prepared for it all.
She hadn’t prepared for failure. It would some consolation when the disease overtook her that she still had that love to hold onto. The only real unadulterated passion in her life would be there to ease her way to oblivion.
However awful the suffocation would end up being.
