Fic idea Frank falling for Mason but Mason’s just (semi unintentionally) using him as a replacement for his wife before and after her death .. sighs …
Mason never thought Frank had feelings for him beyond it being platonic and the two just fulfilling a mutual desire for partnership and companionship (and probably physical touch LMFAOOO) bc hetero is just . The default.
He assumed Woods was straight automatically, and back in the 50’s-60’s a lot of soliders would form at least semi romantic bonds with one another, queer or not, because they were searching for comfort in one another
Frank’s slowly discovering a very forbidden (for the time) part of himself that he’d never gotten to explore bc 1. he never liked anyone enough to realize he was queer and 2. ppl are terribly homophobic, so even if he HAD realized he’d lose everything if other people knew
Things are loonnneelllyyyyy while Mason’s away from his wife so he starts leaning more and more on Frank to fill those gaps bc the man’s his best friend so he just kinda figured having a closer friendship with him would be normal, which starts giving Frank the wrong idea about their relationship once he finally realizes o jesus i might be in love with him what do i do?? What does all this increased affection mean?????? He’s married ???? Hello ????????
it’s more casual at first with longer hugs, lingering touches, grabbing onto one another for reassurance, etc,,,, then things get even more complicated after Mason’s wife dies. He’s so grief stricken that he doesn’t even realize the more intimate/romantic appearing lines he’s blurring and crossing to survive losing her until it’s too late, and Frank’s jst kinda going along with it and helping Mason hide this part of their relationship because he thought that Mason, despite missing his wife, felt the same way and was just indulging more because she was out of the picture
The climax of all this would be them getting drunk and making out (bonus points if it was Mason initiating thinking Frank was his wife curtesy of hallucinations LMAO) which is finally the thing that forces Mason to sober up and realize he’s pushed things too far, leaving Frank heart broken and also horrified bc ??? What ! what do you mean u don’t feel the same we’ve literalky been leaning on each other on long car rides and holding hands and cuddling and you’ve stroked my cheek and held me close and looked at me like i was the only thing that mattered to you !!!! You literally kissed me!! What!!!! This isn’t mutual ?!?? And he also doesn’t know how Mason would react to his queerness because Frank’s only just discovering it himself and they’ve probably never talked abt queerness and how they feel abt gay people bc the consensus in the military is . Gay people r bad
Things are awkward for a while and they slowly just kinda pretend like everything is normal and they don’t talk abt the fact that they were essentially dating for a while on accident and Frank’s hashtag NOT over it, but he’s not gonna ruin their friendship like that,, not when he has the chance to move on and pretend like it never happened all for the sake of not losing Mason bc despite everything he’s still in love with him and values his friendship and that guys basically all he’s got,,,, he can’t help the growing resentment though ,,,
He tries to excuse it for a while because of Mason’s mental illness and his occasional inability to distinguish hallucinations from reality, but then he eventually just starts feeling angry at Mason bc that guy has had a real relationship before. He has a KID. He KNOWS what romance looks and feels like. He should’ve realized and should’ve put a stop to it so much sooner if he didn’t feel the same. Franks never really had the time, interest, or energy to pursue anyone romantically (as far as i can tell in game and from his wiki), so he’s prolly less experienced on what a real relationship is supposed to look like. Mason has like . No excuse for not realizing unless he’s just embarrassingly dense LMFAOO
But at the end of the day, he loves Mason dearly. He refuses to end their friendship, even if it hurts, because losing him would hurt so much more (lol,,).
(Bonus points if Mason sobers up but continues pursuing Woods anyway bc he also doesn’t wanna lose him but he doesn’t know how to come back from all this, and also bc he’s still using Frank cuz after being tortured in Vorkuta and hallucinating a dead man for so long it’s rlly hard for him to be and feel alone lest the hallucinations return)
