The Importance of Intersectionality

This week in class, we were introduced to the idea of intersectionality. Intersectionality is the idea that identities can be intertwined regardless if they're both oppressed. This is important because oftentimes, these individuals that fall under the intersectionality category are overlooked. It is important to be able to identify this in order to move forward as a society. The term intersectionality originally began as a term describing the overlapping identities between race and gender. Nowadays, this term has expanded between other aspects of identity. Such as sexuality, socio-economic class, or religion. Recognizing that these overlapping identities exist can help people be more understanding of others and create a resolution to oppression.

A Pew Research Center survey published two years ago found that 70% of 18-to-24-year-olds who use the Internet had experienced harassment, and 26% of women that age said they’d been stalked online.
