LOVECRAFT COUNTRY: PHOTOGRAPHY TO VIDEO
DEPARTMENT STORE: Mobile - Alabama (1956), by Gordon Parks UNTITLED: Shady Grove - Alabama (1956), by Gordon Parks THE LOUISVILLE FLOOD: Louisville - Kentucky (1937), by Margaret Bourke-White
“My mom would leave me by myself all the time. Say she was going to church. But even then, I knew that was a lie. She always came home, usually with some new man hanging on her arm. Till one day, she didn’t, and a week went by. I was so scared that she wasn’t gonna come back. And I was little. I… I didn’t… I didn’t know how to take care of myself.”
Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors in Lovecraft Country Series by Misha Green, Jordan Peele & JJ Abrams
god why was this the most touching episode tho. hippolyta got to experience lives she could only dream of, explored and lived in far out worlds and got closure with george. the message of expericing that freedom in life that is denied for so many of us, especially black women is sooo powerful. honestly the most poignant episode so far
This new episode of Lovecraft Country felt like a love letter to Black women around the world. The way Hippolyta reaffirmed her name and her existence was beautiful. Too often, Black women are expected to shrink themselves or downplay their abilities to make others around them feel comfortable—leaving no space for us to be ourselves. Hippolyta demanding she be heard, seen, loved, appreciated in all facets is inspirational!

“I’m not real, I’m just like you. You don’t exist in this society. If you did your people wouldn’t be seeking equal rights. You’re not real, if you were you’d have some status among the nations of the world. So we are both myths. I do not come to you as a reality, I come to you as the myth because that is what black people are: myths. I came from a dream that the black man dreamed long ago. I’m actually a presence sent to you by your ancestors. I’m going to be here until I pick out some of you to take back with me”
— Sun Ra
((Lovecraft does this thing I really enjoy; where suddenly a poem is recited in the background, like music, in a scene))
Now that I’m tasting it… Freedom. Like I’ve never known before. I see it — what I was robbed off back there.
All those years I thought I had everything I ever wanted only to come here and discover that all I ever was, was the exact kind of negro woman white folks wanted me to be.

You are here because you knew that all they offer was the freedom that a well-kept slave could ever ask for. Now, I cannot tell you what true freedom is. You have got to find that for yourself.
