"The Anatomy of Melancholy" by Laura Makabresku
Tom Dale: Department of the Interior (2014)
There’ll always be a part of me that wants to create. But I feel like there’s this invisible pressure to make art for an audience, for consumption, for validation but it’s never been about that. It’s about creating for myself. It’s about expressing my feelings and letting go of energy. It’s about exploring my story and channelling my culture and heritage which is so rich in history. There r so many identities for me to explore, my country, the country where I was born, the city in which I lived, my religion, my family, my friends… and also. I want to let go of perfection. My art is still valid even if it doesn’t align with the art I see in galleries. It doesn’t need to be easily digestible for any audience. Think i want to envision a loving and warm space for myself, where I can create without judgement, without perfection.
