I marched Surf last summer and I’m going back this summer and he knows that. so I was just like “Uh well I’m actually doing my second year of DCI this summer with Surf” and then he was like “Oh but that’s just Surf, I meant like a good DCI corps though, like Glassmen or something” And I didn’t want to get into a huge debate with him so I just was like “dude, Glassmen doesn’t even exist anymore”
BUT YEAh. I’m just so sick and tired of people who clearly know nothing about the activity shit talk Surf because they just assume that since we don’t place well competitively we don’t work hard or we aren’t good. Like, he hasn’t even seen a Surf show, ever. It’s just really fucking shitty when someone manages to discredit all of the sweat, passion, tears, pain, time, and money I put into marching. And I know he knows hardly anything about drum corps so his opinion/lack of knowledge really shouldn’t irritate me as much as it is, but I think it’s a culmination of lots of people thinking that lower corps like Surf are lame and pathetic and stuff. Like, I’ve met many people that I march with at other places tell me I’m wasting my money at Surf, or that they’d never spend that much money to not make semifinals, or that Surf isn’t worth it, or that they think I could march somewhere so much better. Like, it just really hurts because they don’t know or care how much this summer with Surf changed my life in so many fucking ways that I don’t even want to begin to list because there are so many. I’m not in this activity to fucking get a medal or make finals, I’m in this activity for personal growth, in so many different ways, and I have gained SO much from marching Surf and that’s gonna happen again this summer.
