Decided to do a catch up on a cult classic film afternoon and went for the shortest DVD which at an hour and half is Reservoir Dogs.
It's Tarantino and the amusement of the suits and the names means it was always going to get that cult status. It's really not a great watch though.
That's pretty much all I have to say. Underwhelmed.

Over the first part of the week our customer disabled toilets and baby changing facilities were out of action due to a blockage. It never ceases to amaze me how angry people can get when a free gift is taken away. Our store has no obligation to provide any toilets (bear in mind the ladies and gents were both working) or baby changing, especially as the shopping centre does. Even worse is the fact many of those who use the facilities come in purely for purpose; they aren't even our customers! And yet mother with pushchair after mother with pushchair would get in a huff as we explained that the facilities were out of order (I'd have much more sympathy for someone in a wheelchair - yet I don't recall a single complaint from anybody with a disability) It is, of course, a picture of our sin. God gives us so many free, good, blessings that we take for granted and we even get angry when we temporarily aren't able to receive/access/enjoy one. It's really quote shocking when you see it in action.
In continuing my interest projects I managed top get the original, classic, US Marvel comics of Transformers. I've read the first four (which also became the first four issues of the UK comics) and rather enjoyed it. My brother and his girlfriend love Marvel and as a graphic designer he now can't stop reading the comics but most superhero comics wouldn't really interest me. Transformers, however, are a different ball game! I am a child of the eighties after all. There really was no need for the inclusion of Spider-Man in issue 3 but other than that it was great to go back to my childhood from a different angle and I'll have to check out the UK issues that followed and eventually took over as the superior series.

So my new projects approach got kicked off with finding this sitcom on Virgin Media. Admittedly to watch the whole series (which I had to do because I enjoyed it so much) I had to complete it by today because Virgin Media suddenly decided all the Warner TV series were being taken off at the end of May!
The series though was genius and worth the watch just for the opening segment of each episode. The series is all about 3 couples in one family and the differences between their relationships. Firstly the youngest daughter has gotten pregnant by her boyfriend she'd just met and we follow their nine month journey to marriage and baby (both of which happen in the last episode!). Secondly the eldest daughter who isn't engaged but co-habiting which is "a valid life choice" (a joke that crops up again and again until we discover the real reason for their lack of engagement). Then lastly the parents, who are retired and have been together many years.
I'd recommend it highly but I'm not sure how anybody will be able to watch it now!
Too many interests
Something I've been wrestling with for a while is that my spectrum of interests is very broad (as indeed are my skills). I think this is a real blessing but it does leave me with so much I would love to do and yet so little time! Even worse though is the fact that I do often have the time but I don't dedicate it to something enough, partly because I default into rubbish pastimes too often and waste the time which is deeply frustrating (to myself) and partly because my attention can shoot off into other things [I am awful at actually finishing books - I still have half a chapter of Different by Design left to read and the final few chapters of Treasure Island, both from weeks/months ago!]
Recently I was asking my brother about his girlfriend's Asperger Syndrome and he said one of things is that she will get completely obsessed with something for a period of time (to her detriment) and so he has to help her by keep moving her onto new projects every few days. For someone who doesn't have an Autistic disorder and a broad interest base I think this might actually be a helpful way to operate (to a point).
There are, however, things that I need regularly (and struggle to do regularly for the reasons stated earlier). I do manage to shower and brush my teeth everyday (albeit only at night), which is an improvement on ten years ago, but I still struggle with reading my Bible consistently and regular deliberate prayer times [I have become better with spontaneous prayer and also now have a better theology of prayer thanks to NWA]. I also long for the day when I nail down a regular exercise routine. I love running, I killing myself on the exercise bike, and I'd even love to get into doing circuit training similar to what I learnt first-hand from an Olympic gold medallist in the autumn! It is tough with my ingrown toenails which I really should get removed and I do find it hard to fit in around work when I'm on my feet all day but really, are these are just excuses?
So, the way forward needs to be a two-fold approach. On the one hand I need regularity in my time spent alone with God, my Father, listening to him through his word and speaking to him in prayer and I need that also in exercise. Being me, these will still have some inconsistency and will need flexibility; I've learnt that about myself and realised that I should embrace that, rather than try to be someone I'm not. But, on the other hand, with general interests I can do the projects approach; short bursts of fully enjoying different interests and activities. Complete a jigsaw, read a whole book, watch a series etc etc. This doesn't mean I can't randomly pick up the guitar or ukulele, it doesn't mean I can't randomly play darts or a board game or do a puzzle or have a go on the wii or... you get the idea! But I think this approach may help me enjoy some things more than I get to now and once my time gets much tighter if I move into full-time church/pastoral ministry it could really help.
This was one of those films that makes you laugh in the cinema trailers and you make a mental note to see that some time. Took the opportunity with Dad at the weekend to catch up with it on Sky anytime.
There are 2 storylines in the film and I thought they complimented each other brilliantly. The present day storyline is sweet and fun, classic sort of family CGI animation; the what happened in the past storyline (as told by it's principal character now old and sad about it) though is hilarious! The singing fish kept leaving Dad almost choking with laughter.
I'm sure they've played around with a Dr Suess classic book too much and there will be people annoyed about it but I haven't read the book and I thought it was genius.

When is a penalty not a penalty?
As the Premier League season drew to a close on Sunday Gareth Bale managed to sum up the 2 big problems that need addressing this summer by appealing for 2 separate penalties.
The first was judged by the referee to be a dive for which he was booked. The problem is this: defenders are now allowed to get away with murder (figuratively speaking) and so attackers are being forced, when they are legitimately fouled, to make a point of it by flopping to the deck. We seem to have shamed out, to a degree, the blatant dive (there are some notable exceptions - see Chelsea, Dempsey, Suarez....) but there is now a definite going down when fouled to try and ensure you get the penalty. Whether this is right or not is certainly debatable but what it is doing is causing refs (or commentators and pundits) to miss the actual foul. Earlier that afternoon, Yeovil and Brentford were playing the League One playoff final at Wembley and a Brentford player slid across a Yeovil player and hit his opposite foot. The Yeovil player flopped to the ground but the ref waved away the penalty claim. Did the attacker go down a bit theatrically? Yeah he did. Was there a clear foul? Yes there was. His leg went across the player blocking his right leg and standing on his left foot leaving the player nowhere to go but to the floor; it is a penalty. Another example was last weekend's Championship play-off semi-final when in the last minute Leicester got a penalty against Watford (they missed the penalty and Watford went up the other end and scored) but all the pundits (both on TV and twitter) were saying the Leicester player dived. Again he did go down a bit hard for the nature of the foul but why are we overlooking the fact it was a blatant foul?? Why are defenders being allowed to manhandle attackers in the box? The Leicester player got goal side of the Watford player as he burst into the box and the Watford player's response was to yank his shoulder back. It's a foul; it's therefore a penalty. Until referees are instructed to give a penalty for any foul in the box (as is the law of the game) this problem is going to get worse - defenders will push the boundaries and, basically, cheat, and attackers will feel the need to exaggerate the real fouls - in some people's books also cheating.
Bale's second penalty shout was something that must be sorted out. It was, of course, handball. The law of the game says "deliberate handball". Quite frankly, the law is letting the game down. How often do people deliberately handle the ball in the box? A couple of times a season? And yet penalties are given every week. A simple rewriting of the law to say it is handball if it is deemed by the referee as being deliberate and/or it is a motion of the hand towards the ball (and striking it) that gives a clear advantage to that team, even if is not clearly deliberate or intentional. I doubt somehow we will have any clarity on handball by next season and every referee will play by his own rules again.

Epic Saturday
It was a real stress getting the day off work but it was totally worth the effort!
In the middle of the week the weather forecast was suggesting rain all day; first light, then heavy. Fortunately that only became reality above the North-South divide and, whilst Lords was covered in cloud for all but 10 minutes, we had play all day. Not only did we have play but we had an enthralling day. Highlights had to include the Southee vs Finn over (where Southee hit 3 boundaries, swung and missed twice, and ballooned the last ball in the air to be caught out), Joe Root's wonderful batting and yet comedic calling and running between the wickets, the incredible hush that fell on the whole ground as we watched the Alistair Cook review, the hilarity of Wagner's one-man appeal (the only person in the entire ground appealing loudly for an LBW) and the superb efforts of the rugby tackling steward who pinned down a pitch invader only to wait for an eternity for his fellow stewards to decide they should help him. It was great to share all these with my brother and my dad, and we rather enjoyed our lunchtime pies too.
I didn't make it home before midnight as I went and sat at my best friend's feet (yes, she is a teacher; no, she wasn't teaching me) and watched Eurovision. It was great doing the Eurovision party experience for once and particularly with a mix of Eurovision fans and, well, those who are somewhat bewildered by the whole thing! The night can be summarised by the fact that I spent most of it laughing and that surely can't be a bad thing.
