“Some bisexuals protect themselves, their jobs and/or their families by pretending they are heterosexual. Others feel safe by pretending they are homosexual. Why do bisexuals feel the need to deny who they are in order to feel safe? Why do some lesbians and gays feel the need to pretend they are heterosexual to family, employers, government agencies, the armed forces, health and life insurance companies, or the courts? The issue is not whether this behavior is right or wrong. What needs to be challenged is mainstream society’s message to bisexuals, lesbians and gays to either assimilate or die. To those gays and lesbians who accuse us of hiding in heterosexual privilege, I say get off our backs and stop using the classic “blame the victim” mentality. And while you’re at it, own up to the fact that within the lesbian and gay communities, bisexuals are often expected to assimilate or vanish.”
