One of the many things that infuriate me about recent trends on the left is the way they talk about solidarity, but what they demand looks and smells an awful lot like loyalty.

Read theory. Read the commentaries on the theory. If you don't understand, that proves you haven't read enough. If you disagree with any of it, that proves you're a bad person.

Follow the right influencers. Support the right politicians. Follow the leaders of our movement. Until we decide they're bad people, anyway.

March in our protests. Commit to our boycotts. Donate to our causes. Don't ask what we hope to achieve or how we think we're going to get that effect from what we're doing. Only a bad person would ask those questions.

Wave the flags and shout the slogans of people who want to kill you. People who don't see you as human because you're a woman, because you're queer, because you're Western. If you think solidarity requires any element of reciprocity, even to the point of both sides recognizing each other's human rights, that proves you're a bad person.

Okay. What the US and Israel is doing in Iran is royally fucked up. That’s not up for debate. But what’s also fucked up is the Islamic Regime in Iran. Just because the US and Israel have illegally attacked the Islamic Regime, does not mean you have to support them.

They are a repressive theocracy, and honestly some of the stuff that conservatives are saying about Iran, especially their government, is completely true. It’s a dictatorship that has been massacring its people since 1979, through executions for the smallest of crimes and through deploying military grade weapons against protesting crowds. The Islamic republic does not deserve any of your sympathies.

I get where some of the support is coming from, because a lot of people’s first introduction to Iran was probably this war. But the only people you need to support are the civilians on both sides. Don’t support Israel and the IS, and don’t support the IR. they are all equally repressive, horrendous governments who’ve committed war crimes. All of them.

Support the Iranian people, which includes the diaspora. That doesn’t mean amplifying the voices of the likes of Elica Le Bon, Goldie Ghamari, Moj or any of these other pro war pro Pahlavi activists. That doesn’t mean supporting Reza Pahlavi, the so called transitional leader. (Do you guys really think he will just be a transitional leader?)

This support means looking at Iranians perspectives. Hearing them out. From all sides. Iranians are not a monolith. Some are pro war, some are anti war. Some are pro Pahlavi some are anti Pahlavi. Some are pro regime, some are anti regime.

But the vast majority (60%-90%) of Iranians inside Iran are against the Islamic Regime. In the diaspora that number is higher. That is something basically all Iranians are united against. So listen to the people of the country.

So in conclusion, if you’re anti war, that’s awesome. Don’t let anyone tell you that this war is for liberation because it’s not. Khamenei Sr dying was phenomenal. But everything else? It’s abhorrent. What’s happening in Lebanon as a result is horrific. And this also has such a massive impact on the lives of anyone that relies on the Strait of Hormuz. First: No one is calling you (or anyone else) antisemitic for being against genocide.

Next: There’s a ceasefire in Gaza right now. There’s been a ceasefire for months. It has held, despite occasional fights breaking out. So no, Israel is not committing genocide in Gaza right now.

WAS Israel committing genocide in Gaza? Multiple investigations by the international community have said no. Do I personally think the war was edging in on genocide territory? Yes. But that’s a long post.

Thankfully, we’ve had a ceasefire for a few months now and it seems to be holding. I hope Palestinians and Israelis can find a path forward to peace without their leaders trying to kill them.
