One of the elements of Twelve Kingdoms I'm Very Normal About is the Taika characters' status as Forever Strangers. This is particularly true for modern times Taika.

They spend their lives feeling something is fundamentally wrong and they shouldn't be living in the world they're living in, coping in all kinds of ways (Taiki isolated and became detached from everything and everyone, Youko turned into a social chameleon and a pathological people pleaser...); yet once they get their chance to "return" to the place they belong... They do not fit there either. Because they were raised in a radically different culture, they're once again fundamentally different from everyone. Struggling to adapt to a strange world.

I can't even quite tell why it's so compelling to me, but I can't get enough.

No actually this is one of the things that makes me so obsessed with Twelve Kingdoms!

I think for me, as an autistic person, I can relate a lot to feeling “made wrong”. You learn to mask to try and fit in with the world at large, but it eventually becomes hard to take the mask off.

You become a stranger even to yourself sometimes! With Taiki in-particular I can totally relate to the feeling of knowing how you’re “supposed” to be, and wanting to be that way, but always falling just short.
