Light, rain, orchard.
Quick doodle In Sketchbook, trying out a friends Dell 2 in 1 to see if I want to buy it for drawing. It's a pretty nice surface, no lag. Need a better pen though!

Also! I made these for one of the teams at Hyland Hills where alex coaches.. they are for the squirt team (10 yr olds) and they traded them with each other at their end of year game (yesterday).. where my bulk of extra time was going towards :)
March 12 2017- I had some time yesterday to relax and just paint. I went to hobby lobby this weekend and picked up a set of cheap gouache paints and some Chinese watercolors. What makes it Chinese? No clue.. but the watercolor was much thinner. I had fun. I really like how the leaves turned out on the red flowers. These remind me of Hawaiian shirts, something my dad would wear.
Will have to keep practicing! I want to make my own set of floral stationery. Must sound so exciting, chris! :P

And now for something completely different...
Not quite done yet, but I’m letting the washes dry so I can do some touch up, and get some black detail in. Traditional fantasy miniature painting is more realisticly painted, with solid colors, and tight washes and fine highlights. I guess I’d call this post-impressionist-ish.
Might be the fat brush I’m using, too. I like stroke and texture.
Mai Linh, I painted this while watching The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. A classic.

Title: what San Diego should have looked like.. I used bounty paper towels and watercolor. I painted on top of a piece of heavy watercolor paper. The print is pretty cool. you can see the giant water stain. Time: 30 mins Size: 6x6 ish MLN
Another day - color/shadow exercise

Just a small piece. There was the crazy X-men character in the New Mutants series (in the 90′s) called Warlock. He was this frenetic alien tech/metal/circuit youth who had a bizarre shifting shape, befriended the young new mutants but never really figured out Earth culture, never fit in. This is a first study for a full Warlock.
He heard we were drawing Disney, so my son handed me these. Disney Characters by my son Konnor, age 14.
Pencil on college rule paper.
Awesome!

Cloudy SF. Not sure what date we're on.. but anyways, San Francisco is one of my favorite places! We try to go at least once a year. Leaving to San Diego this week but kind of wish we were going to Northern California instead. I haven't drawn in days and it feels really good. I used watercolor on the bottom and the top is acrylic. I think have a thing for clouds.... MLN

Day 15 - 02/05/2017 Ponyo and Solske
Ponyo is probably my favorite Disney movie hands down! Hayao Miyazaki is one of my favorite animators. Must watch soon, Chris :) I think your boys and wife will enjoy too. The storyline is almost just like The Little Mermaid. I think you’d also like Kiki’s Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro too..
I used your tutorial as reference. Started out with sketch, filled in the colors, added the highlight and shadows and did some color adjusting. Overall, I think i’m getting a handle on the pen with the cintiq a little better. Thanks for sharing!! I was really excited. Strangely, I think my favorite part of this illustration is the clouds, which probably took the least amount of time to do. Lighting is where I struggle. It’s hard for my mind to figure out where the light hits the body (or even figuring out where the light source should come from) Practice practice practice...
Anyways, I had to do this early since we are going to my cousins house for the super bowl. Happy art-ing!

Day 14 - 02/04/17 Small World
Yes!! Back and ready. Sorry for the short hiatus. This week was a crazy one. Im excited for this week’s new challenge.
This song is officially stuck in my head (it’s a small world after all ...) and i hate it. I used the gouache brush by Kyle Webster and used the cintiq for this. Started with the background first and the characters came in at the end.

Day 12 2/1/17. Lonely Huey Autodesk Sketch, tablet, pencil by 53 Theme: Movies Movie: Silent Running, 1972 Time 1 hr
Always wanted to do a series on my favorite movie robots. Huey, Duey and Louie are three maintenance drones on a deep space botanical refuge ship that was ordered destroyed. They are the stars of the show. Mai Linh, this film is a must see IMHO.
Struggling a bit with this tablet, but getting better all the time. Cm
