That brings us to May 27, 2016, a day that should live in infamy. I get a phone call telling me that the construction crew needs to re-install the gas line to our stove. I called the DOB to find out if they had permits to be doing gas work in the building.
A DOB Marshall and National Grid are dispatched to the building. National Grid shuts off all of the gas to the building. The DOB Marshall issues a stop work order.
The construction workers run away like cowards. The building owner infers this is my fault for wanting them to have proper permits.
Without gas, we have no heat, hot water, or gas for our stove.
They restored hot water two months later by installing a tiny electric water heater in the basement. Gas has not been restored five months later.
It took them six weeks to offer us an electric stove. How did they think we were cooking before that??!! I had bought a convection oven and a hot plate. For the two months we didn’t have hot water, we had to boil water on the electric hot plate for dishes and baths.
I took a lot of cold showers.
Best part of this? I got a rent abatement through the city for one month. It was a whopping $60 off my rent. So far the developers have been fined an incredible $1800 total for working without permits and leaving us without hot water for two months.
