Hair Waves
Hair waves are a short curly hair style for black men which has been popular for quite some time. Some have even traced depictions of short hair waves to ancient Egypt. But how does one get waves in their hair? Well, the process to get waves in hair is not that difficult but will require some determination combined with the right process and products. Read below on how to get hair waves and how to get 360 hair waves while finding out which products to use to maintain your waves hairstyles.
Training your hair waves
What you will need (for a full list of supplies and substitute options view the Products page): Â
• wave brush    to train the direction of your waves • hair lotion     to moisturize and enrich your hair • wave pomade  to help lay down and hold your waves • wave cap      to lay down and hold your waves during sleep • wave shampoo • wave conditioner
Step 1: Apply hair lotion to dry or slightly damp hair and brush in the direction of the desired wave pattern. to train the direction of your waves
Step 2: Apply a dollar sized amount of wave pomade to your hair in the same direction as your brush method.
Step 3: Soak a hand towel with hot water from the sink or after a minute or so in the microwave and wring out.
Step 4: Lay the hot towel on your hair for about one minute while applying slight pressure to let the pomade adhere to your hair follicles.
Step 5: Remove the towel and begin to brush in the direction of the desired waves. Start from the crown of your head and brush to the hairline in a firm controlled sweep. Continue to brush in the same direction for a minimum of 10 times.
Step 6: Apply the wave cap for at least 30 minutes to lay down the hair. This is best done before bed or during time of leisure.
Repeat the process twice a day (before bed and on the way to school or work).
Maintaining Your Hair Waves
Now that you have begun to form some hair waves it is important to follow some steps in order to maintain and strengthen your waves hairstyle.
Keep your hair clean with wave shampoo and wave conditioner. Make sure when applying these products with your hand, brush, or comb that you move in the same pattern as your waves to not break pattern in which your hair has been trained to lay.
Allow your hair to grow for a while as you train it to grow in the pattern you like before getting your next haircut. This is also known as “wolfing” and is an important part of maintaining the wave pattern you have created. When it does finally come time for a haircut be sure to ask your barber to cut with the grain and not too low. You should not get more than one haircut a month unless they are tapers or shapeups.
Brush, brush, brush. Whenever you have free time and are not wearing a wave cap it is important to keep brushing in the desired wave pattern. This helps to train and maintain your hair in the pattern you desire.
Experiment with different wave products to find what suits you best and fits in your budget.
How to Get Waves
Preparing your hair
What you will need (for a full list of supplies and substitute options view the Products page):  • hair clippers to trim hair if the initial haircut will be done by you  • 3 way mirror to get an even cut if the initial haircut will be done by you  • shampoo  • conditioner  Step 1: Your hair will need to be between 1 to 2 inches in length. You can cut your own hair with a set of home clippers like the ones above or professional Andis clippers making sure that the guard used is no less than #1. Begin cutting with the clippers at the crown of your head and cut forward to your hairline for each section of your hair. This is is known as cutting with the grain and should be used for each section of your hair. The 3 way mirror will help you cut the back and sides of your head properly and will be helpful if you decide to line yourself up.You can also visit your barber and request a “dark Ceasar with the grain” haircut if you choose not to cut your own hair.
Step 2: Wash your hair of any loose clippings and make sure to treat your hair and scalp of any conditions such as dandruff using a dandruff shampoo and conditioner for maintaining curls and shine.
How to Get 360 Waves
360 waves are the next step up from normal hair waves in curly hair. These are when waves from each section of your hair connect to form circles or ripples from the crown of your head to the hairline.
Begin your brushing method at the crown of your head and brush to your hairline.
Lift your brush and move to the next section of your crown and brush to your hairline once again.
Repeat this process of brushing forward and lifting the brush for each segment of your hair crown until you have come full circle to your beginning point at your crown. Be sure to overlap your brushing with the last section completed in order to have your 360 waves connect.
Repeat this brushing method as desired or when you have free time in order to train your waves into the new pattern.
