Cute Story of the Day
I just talked to a colleague whose boyfriend is someone she met at music school in the 70's. According to her, they "drifted apart, he got married for 35 years, had three kids, moved across the country, and when his marriage fizzled ... he looked me up!"
She said it like it was the most exciting thing ever invented.
I really enjoy how my little guy things he's about 800-times bigger than he really is. He totally bossed this dog pile.
Some days (looking at you, yesterday), it's harder to choose to be happier than others. On those days, I choose harder.
-- For reals, yesterday I wanted to maul the world, and then I got over it.
Friday, I had an unaccountably looong day "at" work (telecommuting, so I was technically at home, but still felt the shackles of work). Not sure what was going on (I usually LOVE love my job), but at the end of the day, I shook myself off and had some wine to help ease me into the weekend. It was yummy and I got to drink it out of pretty colored tulip glasses that my mother-in-law sent me for Christmas. What could be better?
Saturday morning included a trip with the pup to Ocean Beach for the weekly small dog walk. It makes him so darn happy ... and it's totally contagious.
Officially became a card-carrying member of the SFMOMA and took a girlfriend to see the last weekend of the Richard Serra retrospective (meh ... but worth going).
Dinner with a random gaggle of folks, including my SFMOMA buddy, a friend-of-a-friend of hers who just moved to town, a friend a frequently bump into but never hang out with, Damon, and me. Dinner was great -- random as it was -- and we even hung out in Noe Valley and had a few more drinks after and made fun of all the sad Xmas trees all over the curbs in the neighborhood.
Sunday morning brunch at TOAST! (Always happy-making!)
Ended up meeting up with a friend for some wine at Dolores Park and then wandering to another friend's house after to watch Downtown Abbey -- which I am now officially addicted to (whoops!).
Is life good?

2012 So Far ... It's Gonna Be a Good Year, Y'all
This year so far ...
I got to help my Dad celebrate his 50th birthday in style. (There was a grass skirt involved ... he was wearing it and dancing ... party success!)
I've already been to my first yoga class of the year (and in spite of their being no heat in the room and losing feeling in my toes, it felt good to be back ... even at 7am).
I made it from Ohio to San Francisco without even a hiccup of a delay. (And had to stop in Chicago and Phoenix on the way, so there were a few opportunities for disaster.)
Am feeling peppy and refreshed at work after the holiday slow down.
Fergus (the pup-pup) went up a whooooole flight of stairs unassisted! (One small step for dog ... unless he's a Frenchie with stubby little legs.)
Talked Damon into doing nightly post-dinner walks around the neighborhood ... instead of just gravitating into the living room for mindless TV watching. We had our first little walk last night, and all three of us enjoyed the heck out of it. (Well ... Damon probably would have been happier watching whatever sport was on the TV, but he put up with it for me.)
Have my first 2012 session with my personal trainer tonight, and I'm looking forward to having a good (metaphorical) kick in the bum after some holiday indulgence.
On the menu tonight: Sweet and sour red cabbage, rosemary roasted red potatoes, and sausage (turkey for me, lamb for Damon).
All of this, and we're only FOUR days into the new year!
This face. This perfect little face. This gave me my biggest squee of happy of the whole of 2011!
I got to spend the last several days crawling around on the floor with my little niece (and I have the rug-burned knees to prove it) and just enjoying the heck out of this little sliver of her life that I get to see. I live far away (California to Ohio, sheesh!), so I only get occasional visits ... but for as long as I can make the most of them, I will.
And then Damon came home!
In a long term relationship, it's important to sometimes miss each other. It's so easy in the day-to-day to forget how much you genuinely LIKE having the other person around, that sometimes it's nice to have a reminder.
I had a week-long reminder that I kind of like Damon. And now he's home ... and I'm so glad!

Christmas Day Recap!
Fergus was the star of the show (whoops!) and made it a whole ten hours in a strange house without having an accident. VICTORY!
We ate! We ate! We ate! There was a roast, a ham, cassoulet, Brussels sprouts, saffron mashed potatoes, butternut squash salad, bread pudding, rosemary dinner rolls, spicy lemon date spread, cheeses, champagne, and lots and lots of wine.
Fergus helped get the fire started -- "helped" by repeatedly stealing the poker stick and gnawing on it.
We took a digestive walk down to the Bay around sunset. It was crisp, but really pretty - and the walk was good for wearing out the pup.
We played celebrity for hours -- my team didn't win, but I enjoyed the game anyway. (Though I would have enjoyed it more if we had won.)
We watched Home Alone and When Harry Met Sally while Fergus made his way from lap to lap and some of us grazed.
A wonderfully wonderful Christmas, perhaps the best on record. :)
Our goal should be to live life in radical amazement. ….get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted. Everything is phenomenal; everything is incredible; never treat life casually. To be spiritual is to be amazed.

I had a week (a whole week!) pretty much all to myself. Damon was in Georgia visiting his family for Christmas, and while I love him dearly (dearly!) it was really nice to have a week to just sit with myself a bit. Of course, it was the holidays, so there were friends and drinks and gatherings and to-dos, but there were also big, long hours where it was just me and the pup, and we had such a nice time filling those hours up.
We went on LOTs of long walks through the neighborhood. I let him steer and ended up on a few streets I'd never bothered to explore before.
We took a couple of trips to the dog park, where he got to meet new puppy friends and play.
I did some random organizing (junk drawer, not so junky anymore).
We watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes (and totally rooted for the monkeys).
We walked down to the neighborhood on Christmas morning, got a coffee, found a feather (see photo) and said "Merry Christmas" to some strangers / neighbors.
We listened to the kids next door -- who had family in town for the holiday -- playing in the backyard on Christmas Eve. And then we barked at them a little.
We drank hot toddys (ok ... mostly I drank them, but he was in full support).
I did a little reading and a little writing, though not nearly as much as I thought I would.
Had a couple of Facetime sessions with Damon and his niece and nephew.
The past few days have been so filled to the brim with happy that I'm practically delirious with joy. Giddy! Happy! Wonderful! - Wednesday I met up with two of my favorite ladies for some holiday drinks and dinner an Beretta. Good times! - Last night, I had dinner with friends, and it doubled as a puppy play date with Fergus and one of his best gals, Lovely (she's a lovely English bulldog, and Fergus is smitten) - Today, work wrapped up early. I hit the gym and then Fergus and I went on a long walk around the neighborhood and enjoyed the sunshine. - I got my Xmas dinner shopping done with very little friction -- even given today's proximity to the holiday. - I made some homemade beef biscuits for the pup -- they're kitty and bunny shaped and it made me happy. - I made shakshuka for dinner -- cooking for one can be surprisingly satisfying. - Now, I'm just sitting here with a hot toddy enjoying so chill out time with a puppy on my lap. Ahhhh!

Sunday morning I made from scratch biscuits and sausage gravy. It was very country and very tasty and the only thing capable of combating a cold, gray, San Francisco day.
Sunday evening gingerbread house decorating party time! Jamie (pictured) was pretty much professional. My house looked like it was designed by chipmunks. Hers could be an actual house. Alas! I can't be good at everything (not by a long shot).
Happy Nugget
Talked to my Dad tonight. Chats with him very nearly always make me happy. He's currently making a "bad" business decision (to take a role with less seniority that he'll enjoy more because it's outdoors) in order to be happier. I couldn't be prouder of him.
