Toshiba shows off their new AR device

Toshiba has announced their newest miniature PC called “DE-100 dynaEdge” to the world. It is a fully functional mini-computer powered by a 6th Generation Intel Core processor and running on Windows 10 Pro OS. Weighing a little over 300 grams it is light and small enough to be carried in a pocket without any inconvenience, yet powerful enough and practical like any modern device should be. It comes with an AR headset and naturally, it is fitted with all the basic necessities such as a microphone, touchpad, camera, speakers, GPS, compass, and gyroscope.

The AR interface allows for navigating through images and texts, making audio and video calls, sending and receiving files, interacting with QR codes and much more. The range of applications, however, seems to be focused on industrial environments. This is apparent from its design – which is far from being slick or classy.  

According to Toshiba, the dynaEdge Mobile Mini PC is a “secure collaboration hub that consolidates old peripheral equipment and integrates the latest apps to ensure seamless information sharing”. Toshiba promises that the reliability and durability of their device will be unparalleled. Every dynaEdge mini PC is built to withstand extreme temperatures, vibration, shock, humidity, high altitudes, drops, dust and solar radiation.

The price tag for the device currently stands at $1899 but seeing as it is meant to serve mainly business clients it should find its share of the market easily. For the average user wanting to play around with it, the price is indeed steep, although there will be tech enthusiasts willing to add Toshiba’s dynaEdge to their collections who will surely be able to lay their hands on it despite the price. The device is expected to hit the shelves in the second quarter of 2018.

Messenger Broadcast – new communication tool from Facebook

Facebook is now externally testing their new Messenger Broadcast tool, which was first announced back in November.  The main idea behind this service is to let small businesses use it as a tool for promotion and keeping contact with their followers by mass broadcasting messages to a lot of interested people at once. The curious thing about its working is that it will only allow reaching users that have texted the company first, which actually sounds like a good thing.

Right now it’s available only to a small portion of business pages in the US, Mexico, and Thailand but the Facebook representative already states that it won’t remain free forever. One interesting thing that can be mentioned about the tool is that the number of messages available to be sent will be limited, the main reason for which is to prevent spamming.  Time will tell if this new service developed by Facebook will find popularity among its target audience but it already promises to become another useful tool in the arsenal of SMM experts. That will probably depend on how much Facebook will charge for it.

Skydio, a company focused on intelligent flight technologies, has just released their first fully autonomous flying camera drone, named R1. What sets it apart from all the other similar devices is that it’s able to track and follow individuals at speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour all the while recording videos in 4k resolution and avoiding obstacles. The technology used in it isn’t exactly new but the way it was implemented by Skydio makes the drone look much more impressive than anything available on the market before it.

R1 has a variety of work modes and 13 onboard cameras that allow it to shoot videos from different angles. It's controlled by AI software - Skydio Autonomy Engine, which runs on an NVIDIA Jetson and analyzes the flight data, learning how to better predict the motion of the person it’s following. It can also be used as a standard camera drone by controlling it manually through its smartphone app.

As seen from the video released by Skydio, the way their device tracks and follows its master is strikingly smooth and clever, which allows for some really impressive footage; however the price tag for the gadget currently standing at $ 2500 makes it a very narrow niche product. Still, it will undoubtedly find fans among the tech enthusiasts and people with an active lifestyle. And even though having an AI-controlled flying drone following you everywhere might unnerve some people, most should agree that it’s a fascinating and advanced piece of technology.

In order to prevent the unauthorized use of copyrighted images, Google, as part of an agreement with photobank Getty images, has announced changes to their image search system. The change involves the removal of the “view image” button from Google search, thus preventing users from being able to download full-sized photos directly from Google. Instead, those willing to download the searched image now will have to use the “visit” button, go to the source website, and find and download it themselves.

These changes are the result of repeated accusations that Google makes it easier for internet users to find and download copyrighted images. However, there is already an extension on the Chrome web-store that brings the button back. Remains to be seen for how long it will stay available, but for now, you can download it here:

The technological progress never stops for a moment and almost every day certain inspiring news surface, some of which bring hope to many. Today, we’ll cover not some cool gadget or a gimmick but a device that might actually improve the quality of life of millions of people. SignAll, a small company from Budapest, is developing a prototype machine capable of translating…  sign language in real time. Language barriers have all but fallen with the development of digital translator software – we can get around and even communicate with people in a foreign environment without much hassle. But when it comes to sign language, translating it is a far more challenging task.

Sign language is fundamentally different from spoken and written languages and, as such, translating and interpreting it correctly is times more difficult. That, however, didn’t stop SignAll from undertaking their incredibly ambitious project. We can already see how their technology, when fully developed and perfected, can be applied to the other spheres of life. For now, however, let’s wait and hope they can deliver on their promise to make lives of many a bit more comfortable.

EHang, a Chinese drone tech company has conducted test flights of their latest and newest personal Autonomous Aerial Vehicle – EHang 184. Yes, you got that right, it’s a flying autonomous drone, capable of carrying a single passenger at speeds of up to 130kph. Weighing 230kg this vertical takeoff and landing machine can be controlled by a passenger with a tablet. The drone is fitted with a whole bunch of sensors, fail-safe and backup systems, but for now, there’s one unresolved issue – the battery. It’s not yet powerful enough to be used for reasonably prolonged periods of time.

Whether exactly this model will be able to “lift off” or will remain a cool concept prototype, one thing is certain already: airborne cars will not remain a sci-fi trope for long. Development in that area will surely continue and what screams “future” if not flying cars! What do you think?
