I had to come to grips with the fact that our people were indoctrinated into Christianity during slavery. Our heritage, our spiritual practices and beliefs were stripped from us and our ancestors were forced to accept Jesus in exchange. And so it was passed down from generation to generation even after slavery.
So looking at my own life, I was raised in the church. I accepted Jesus at an early age; not knowing what other options were out there. I hadn’t been exposed to any other faiths. I didn’t know any Muslims or Jews or Wiccans or Voodoo priests or anybody! My whole family was Christians and I went to Catholic School. Losing faith or questioning the faith was seen as frowned; that’s not being a good Christian. I felt like it implied something was wrong with me and my walk with Christ. So my whole life I never questioned my faith; I just tried to work harder at it by praying more and reading the Bible. I didn’t want to be a back slider.. In fact, I felt sorry for people who hadn’t been raised the way I was!
And with that realization, I had to take the blinders off. I had to reject Christianity. I HAD TO! How could I NOT??
If for no other reason than to break that chain that goes all the way back to slavery. So that if I come back to Christianity, it will truly be a choice of my own will and volition, not mindlessly accepting what was fed to me.
