“You need to stop complaining about being a woman”
“You can go to school, you can vote, you can get the same jobs, I don’t see why you need to complain all the time about being a woman” That was said to me recently by someone who I thought was a friend of mine. He is no longer a friend and I have removed him from my life. However, the pressing issue is that I know he still thinks that way. What’s even more concerning is I know there are definitely more males out there that think women don’t need feminism anymore.
It is extremely exhausting having to always fight and argue with males about the treatment I receive and having to “convince” them that it actually happens. Don’t get me wrong not all males are like this, some actually treat me equally and show me nothing but respect. They also offer me the safety I deserve which then just baffles me as I don’t understand how some males can treat women respectfully whereas others choose not to. It bothers me to think that some males genuinely assume I enjoy complaining about feminism and try to silence me. Why do I have to be silenced because you can’t be bothered listening to me “complain”? Do you think I want to complain?
Do you think I enjoy being labelled “crazy” or “psycho” because I had a panic attack whilst telling someone about how I got threatened with rape? Am I really receiving an equal education when I would be too scared to go home from uni late at night? Imagine being absolutely exhausted and having to go on an anxiety fuelled walk home because I was afraid that a stranger would be waiting for me every corner I turned. Do you think the boyfriend I had at the time enjoyed coming into uni at midnight to pick me up because he was worried about my safety? He shouldn’t have had to change his lifestyle to keep me safe because men on empty trains still chose to sit next to me and press their leg against mine. Also what is the point of being given the right to vote when the main candidates aren’t even actively fighting for women’s rights? In the US there is a sexual predator running for president. President?! It sickens me to think someone like that is allowed and STILL running for such a high position of authority when there is so much evidence of their disgusting behaviour. How can we have one of the leaders of this society be a rapist? How?!
As for the work force, I mean yes, I guess I can get the same jobs but try being female and working for a male boss. When I was 19, I worked at a cafe for a man who requested that I wore tighter shorts to work because “it’ll look better”. He also complained whenever I came into work without make up on and gave me a “warning” once because I wore a loose fitting t shirt which looked like gym apparel. Apparently my appearance is supposed to play a big part in my job as a barista. When I quit that job, I was sent text messages about how ungrateful I was and wasn’t even welcomed back into that cafe as a customer. Do you think I wanted to work that crappy cafe job where derogatory comments were made about my appearance daily because I didn’t, I had bills and rent to pay.
These issues I have brought up don’t even begin to skim the surface of the problems I face daily as a female. Don’t even get me started on the treatment I receive as a woman of colour living in a western society. However a therapeutic method of me dealing with these issues is voicing them and making them known. This way I can find comfort with other women going through the same problems and stand in solidarity with them. Maybe, because I am speaking out about my struggles, people will even hear me and push for change. However if you try to oppress me by trying to convince me my problems aren’t real, you are the problem, and you are making it worse. Don’t be surprised if I’m cold towards you when you tell me to stop complaining.
coming out
It’s amazing how better I feel having come out on social media. People will say its dumb, but its where I’m seen, where I live my online life, and project myself. But to me at least thats important, and I thought by deleting Facebook I could escape that fake importance of a like online. But the support I have received is overwhelming and its never been so clear to me that I am supported by my friends and family always. Its heartwarming.

deactivated my facebook, deleted all my social media apps. Except this one really, only because at least people can’t contact me on here too much and I dont actually check what any of you other people post. But im taking a short hiatus; from life. I want to get my drinking under control, i want to get a job, and I want to sort myself out, or just affirm some things about myself. Im struggling a lot with my gender and the importence of gender, and at this queer party i was at on the weekend, while being blind drunk. I just started crying about gender inequality, and heteronormative education. And part of my hiatus is how I can work my passion into something I care about, be it a creative outlet, like drag, or more of a practical difference, like volenteering for Headspace or Minus18 or something along those lines. Thing is I care too much about this to not do anything, and thats what I feel like I am doing by going out every weekend to the same dead ass club and put up with people mis gendering me and being homophobic. But I guess im not even gay anymore if im attracted to trans women. Im a pansexual non-binary motherfucker. And I need to take some time with myself to get this under control. I never struggled with coming out as gay, although I guess I did because the whole process took from like age 16-18. From straight to bi to gay. Now from Gay Guy to Pansexual Demon. I’ve been emersing myself in as much trans culture as I can, and I feel im only just scratching the surface and have no idea how to deeper my understanding of trans history and trans culture. And although I have more trans friends than you can poke a stick at, I dont feel comfortable talking to any of them.
