Don't be a music snob!
"Well I heard that song 8 months ago" is something I hear all the time... sometimes I even hear it from my own brain which I always try to dispel. I have a metaphorical angel on my shoulder saying "get your head out of your arse and realise that you're not the only person who listens to that genre of music!".Â
In the past several years I have witnessed a massive increase of self-proclaimed 'house heads', who we can all spot as the guys that used to turn their nose up at dance music but now can't talk about anything else. They're the ones that click attending to every new event on Facebook and are spending their minimum wage packet to get the latest article of rave clothing (see Huaraches, bumbags, Siksilk shirts) and they are the people that Cuntswatching rinses on a daily... And some of the time I agree and scoff at these 'hipsters' because let's face it, some of them are idiots.Â
However, the better part of me is coming to realise that it is none of my fucking business. So what if they follow the crowd and buy some hideous outfit because they want to look rascal? That's their choice and who am I, in all my glory, to pass judgement on what they want to do? If that's what they want then leave them to it, man.
It's so easy to get precious about the sort of music you like, especially when you see people from your hometown getting involved and going to the same events that you do... but the music or the event wasn't created for you alone! We need to get back to when the music was about everyone coming together and enjoying the experience; you don't see people sharking others at raves in the 90's and I don't want to see it now. Remember, there's always going to be someone that heard the song or attended the event before you so everyone needs to two-step down from their high horse.Â
The only thing that I will say is that everyone needs to accept everyone, whether you've been attending raves for 2 years or 2 weeks. That goes out to the veterans who are getting precious AND all new-found-ravers who are coming to events and starting trouble as if they're in Walkabout. It's all about love of the music, remember it.
Note: this applies to all genres of music, I am using dance as an example because it's my favourite genre.
