imagine if sorcerer were more popular and you could buy little toy sorcerers and lazaros that you can pull back and release and they'll zip off recklessly.
someone would absolutely fill them with real nitroglycerin and blow them up for a video. then someone else would try to imitate this and get their hand blown off.
maybe it's for the better that star wars won in the box office that week.
the tubi version of wages of fear doesn't have subtitles even though there's immediately like 4 different languages going
every time a mention of sorcerer gets enough traction online, there are people in the replies saying to watch the older adaptation because it's better and/or more intense, and. i think it's a fine enough movie, the stunts are harrowing, the gradual rise in tension is done well, and it's absolutely delightful that 2 of the main characters are named mario and luigi (and they're roommates!), but it's a bit silly to say that sorcerer isn't the stronger film.
favorite type of word: names of genres that tell you nothing without context. literary fiction. popular music. interactive fiction. lets invent a new genre called experiencable media
additions: speculative fiction, art film, point and click, simulation game. anything that makes you say "i sure hope so"

fitzcarraldo (1982) 🤝 sorcerer (1977)
movies about people losing their minds while attempting seemingly impossible feats against nature in south america that required the film crew to actually lose their minds attempting seemingly impossible feats against nature while their sponsors beg the directors to stop
i'm still not really sure why it's called sorcerer, and this seems a common sentiment. i know it's the name of one of the trucks and i know it was the 70s, but that can't have been the most fitting name for this fairly realistic movie about crime and exploitation and battling the elements.
it IS evocative, though, like it's suggesting that nature is a cruel wizard. apparently friedkin's own explanation is that the sorcerer is fate, which, i mean, same difference (not really, but close enough).
the other truck's name is lazaro, a name derived from lazarus or eleazar, which mean "one helped by god." it'd be an interesting contrast to "sorcerer" if they'd done anything with it. evoking lazarus is also an odd choice given how things go, but maybe it can be understood as hope. then one truck is named after hope, the other after fate, so it's fitting that (spoilers?) fate goes out with a bang and hope runs out of steam.
in any case, if you just hear the name "sorcerer" you're not going to assume that the movie is what it is. but the title, along with the image of the truck on bridge, stuck in my mind from the moment i saw it, and (provided that you know it's not a fantasy story) it does put you in the right mindset for the movie. i don't know that that justifies it being called that, but it is what it is.
there's one moment in sorcerer that's remarkably cliche and was almost funny but my 2nd favorite character (after the green truck) died so it wasn't
