Culture Shower, Day 2
Day 2 of the cultuurdouche programme began so well inside the Rondom 1 building with the coming together of the students in the same group, meeting themselves to talk about their keynotes assigned to them. My group was not left out. We met and we figured a way out on what to come up with and how to present it in a creative art work using the keynote. Different ideas were considered and at the end of the day, we all reached an agreement.
After that we( International students) went to room to 3.10 inside the state of the art Rondom 1 building. We began the cultuurdouche programme for that day with Mr. Ramon Vullings with the question and answer session which lasted for one hour. After that, Mr. Ramon Vullings talked about how to make a log, tumblr blogs and mind map,the importance of the log, the tumblr blog and the mind map .Things we have to consider when making a log, a tumblr blog and a mind map. Also, he named the site to go to create a tumblr blog. It was really fun-filled.He also talked about iplanner and grammerly and their importance.
After that we had one and the half hour break. So i use the opportunity to walk round the Rondom 1 building to have views of the building. Also i walked down to TU/e to feed my eyes.
After the break, we all gathered in room 3.76 in the same Rondom 1 building where we had a great time-out with IEM teachers. It was fun. Each teacher took turn to introduced themselves to us and talked about their course and their importance, what to expect in the first quarter and making us to know the importance of the courses. Some of them introduced their textbooks to us. Some also gave us areas of study to prepare us for the first quarter exam.It was fun seeing them talked about their course and each telling us why his course is the best among the rest and making mockery of the other courses. It was really exciting being in the midst of the great men.
The cultuurdouche programme for today came to an end with the dissemination of information of activities lined up for the next day and the remaining days of the Cultuurdouche programme.
Culture Shower, Day 3
Going back to the Parktheater for day 3 of the culuurdouche programme was explosive. The activities for the day started with coming together of the IEM international with Mr.Kees de Bie (Vanderlande) addressing us . He shared his working experience as an industrial engineer, working in various departments of the organization he works with, working with foreigners, be able to accept these foreigners with their ideas, looking for ways to communicate with them and trying to figure out solutions with those he worked with and works for/with irrespective of their cultural and educational differences. He also shared with us about the challenges he experienced and his biggest regret in his career. After that, questions were showered on him but he stood his ground very well in giving us answers to the questions. We also listened to Mr.Martin de Ruiter (RoyalFloraHolland) as he shared his 30 years working experience with us.After that, questions were asked and he showed capability in answering these questions.
After the talk with Mr.Martin de Ruiter (RoyalFloraHolland), we had a one hour lunch break which we ( the various groups, both the international students and the dutch students) used the opportunity to gather to make-up questions to ask the experts that we are to meet after the break. At the end of the break, we reconvened this time to meet with the experts, each expert had 15 minutes to talk to us, share their experiences in their various field of endeavors. We asked various questions to each one of them and they gave us answers to the questions. Though, some answers were not satisfactory to us anyway. At the end of interviews with the experts, i was very happy tapping their ideas and learning how they were able to withstand challenges and becoming great men and women in their various fields.
To conclude the day’s activities, information was disseminated to us concerning the activities for the next day and the remaining days of the cultuurdouche programme, and we dispersed.
Cultuurdouche Week. Day 1
Wow! Finally, my academic journey in the Netherlands began so well. My anxieties and wait were taken away, breathing a sign of relief.
The summer academic session began with the coming together of both international students and dutch students in Industrial Engineering & Management at Park-theater to begin the Cultuurdouche (Culture Shower) programme. Before i proceed,i will like to define what Cultuurdouche and Industrial Management mean. Cultuurdouche is a metaphor for an immersion, get to know Industrial Engineering & Management: the work, the study and the world; by experiencing and researching (by) yourself. The programme is to give us a clear understanding on what IEM is all about. Also, Industrial engineering and Management is the optimization of complex processes or organizations by developing, improving and implementing integrated people, money, knowledge, information, energy and materials.
We began the cultuurdouche programme with Mr. Ramon Vullings and Mr. Annet Goltstein and we were split into groups. These groups are assigned with working on various keynotes. My group, group 7, keynote tagged “Make or Buy Decision and Inclusion. After that, we listen to a talk from Mr. Ramon Vullings on Industrial Engineering and Management and what to expect in Cultuurdouche during the course of the week.
After that we(both the Dutch and International students) went to see a movie “ The Martian”. We were asked to relate whatever we learn from the movie to Industrial Engineering and Management. The movie is about a man who was left behind by his co-astronauts that went on a mission to space, he was presumed death. However, the man manage to be alive. So he was in space alone with limited food and water to sustain him for a short period of time.Against all odds, he managed to survive the ordeal by devising means of survival with virtually nothing. He encountered different problems in the course of doing this, but he never relented. He also figured means of communication to alight others ( colleagues and employers) to let them know he was alive. At the end, his astuteness kept him alive, making him the hero in the movie.
The movie was fun and exciting, be the first time i will seeing a movie in the cinema. It was wowwwwwwwwww! I really enjoy the experience.
After the movie, we gathered together where we were, before we went to see the movie. The eight various groups were merged and formed into four groups and these four groups were given a mentor each. The group i am, has Mr. Eppenhof as its mentor. We met with him, he introduced himself to us and we did likewise. He did some talks and told us to always come to him and to other teachers whenever any of us has something to ask or need help concerning our study.
The day’s programme came to a close with the dissemination of information concerning the programmes for the remaining days of the cultuurdouche progamme.
Culture Shower, Day 5
Day 5 was full of fun where all IE&M students gathered together at the IEM museum, in the Rondom 1 building, where the various groups displayed their various art works. I think it should be one of the most exciting days if not the most exciting day for me.
They were display of different art works from the various groups of both the international and dutch streams. It was an atmosphere to behold.Students seized the opportunity to walk around to have views of the art works made by fellow students.Questions were asked by these students to their fellow students about their creative works, and in turn they were answers to these questions. Students were asked to vote for the best creative work. And at the end,a group from the dutch stream emerged as the creative minded group. Honestly, this group deserved to come out top, because their art was superb. In fact, i envy their artwork.
After the 30 minutes lunch break, IEM English stream gathered together in room 4.74 with Mr. Ramon Vullings and Mr. Annet Goltstein. Questions were asked by Mr. Ramon Vullings to the students and he got answers to these questions.information concerning next week programmes was disseminated. We were split into groups for next week activities. Also A3 papers were given to the students for their mind map which is to be submitted on next week.
Culture Shower, Day 4
Not much activities in day 4 of the Cultuurdouche . We had a great time-out with Mr. .He talked about what to expect during the study period. He talked about the grading system. After that, we had a math test to test our mathematical prowess. The maths test was encouraging because of the reason behind it. I have this sense of acceptance and belonged, and i am hopeful it will be a source of inspiration for me not just in my study, also in my endeavors in all aspects of my life.. Immediately after the test, we(the students) met together in our different groups to wrap up our creative art work in other to prepare for the next day’s activities where we will have to showcase what we have done. My group was not left out. We concluded ours and wished ourselves good-luck.
