At first you believed all the rumours and talk about Max Hatter son of Maddox Hatter.
āYou couldnāt trust Max Hatter as far as you could throw him.ā
āHeās just like his father heās mad.ā
āHeās always playing games.ā
Every student at Auradon Prep talked about Max like this and maybe thatās why you believed the ārumoursā. After all, you were Rapunzel and Flynn Riderās daughter so of course you knew all about stories, reputations, and people judging someone without even bothering to find out the truth.
So everytime he made a sarcastic comment, a smug grin or a teasing remark, it just cemented what everyone had told you. Or so you thought, on your way to meet Chloe and Red you accidentally overheard a conversation, Max didnāt know you were there.
He was sitting alone outside the school gardens, absentmindedly spinning his hat in his hands, one of the other students walks past, āGuess being the Maddox Hatterās son means youāll end up just as crazy.ā they laughed, Max sat there putting a on a fake smile and said, āGuess so.ā. As they walked away his smile dropped as he let out a sigh. You didnāt know why but part of you felt a bit sad seeing him sat there on his own
A few days after the incident you were in class, everyone was being paired up for an assignment and of course you were paired up with Max. He started to walk towards you āgreatā you say dripping in sarcasm, āyou literally could have picked anyone else in the classā you added. He sat down next to you and rolled his eyes as he said ātrust me, sunshine, Iām just as thrilled.ā
As the week goes on and you work on the assignment you start to notice things about him like how patient he stays when you get frustrated, he does parts of the assignment without asking for credit, he makes sure youāre not struggling, youāre in the library one day working on the assignment you are stressed to the max (no pun intended) you notice him looking at you from the corner of your eye, āyou ok?ā He asks, you keep your head down āyeah Iām fine Iām just mentally clocked out of this assignment I canāt wait for it to be overā you reply. āDonāt worry weāll get through this and you wonāt have to be around me anymoreā he says. You felt bad when he said this but also confused because his voice sounded softer than youāve ever heard it.
This doesnāt match the person everyone describes. Later that evening youāre walking back to the dorms together. Thereās an awkward but nice silence, you couldnāt hold it in any longer and ask , āWhy do you let people think youāre awful?ā Max strugs at your question like itās nothing and says āBecause itās easier.ā, āEasier than what?ā you ask. He looks away from you and replies āTrying to convince everyone Iām not my dad.ā This makes your heart sink, thereās silence for a few moments before he talks again, āThe second people hear my last nameā¦ā he says with a slight pain in his voice but he laughs quietly after the words leave his mouth ātheyāve already decided who I am, so I stopped trying.ā he adds.
This stops you in your tracks immediately and he notices straight away, āwhat?ā he asks. āMax Iām really sorry I was wrong about youā you say as you shake your head. He has a surprised look on his face when you said this, āYouāre not pretending to be someone else youāre pretending not to care.ā you say sadly. He stared at you like he was trying stare right through you as if nobody had ever said that to him before.
āYou really think that?ā He questions, āI know that.ā you reply. There was silence again but it was a silence that said what needed to be said. After that conversation you started to see the real Max, you saw he was so much more than his sarcasm, he was kind and caring, he would always hang back to help clean up, he would use jokes to hide when heās hurting. The more you seen him, the more he reminded you of the kind of person your mother always believed people could be, he was someone worth looking past the rumors for.
One day you and max were walking to class and someone muttered as you walked past āFigures. The Mad Hatterās kid.ā Before Max could even pretend it didnt bother him you spoke up āMaybe stop judging people by their parents.ā They all went quiet, you moved closer to Max and spoke again, āIf you actually got to know him, youād realize heās one of the kindest people here.ā You smiled. Max looked at you in complete shock , no one had ever defended him like that atleast not publicly. They all walked away and he looks at you and quietly says āThanks.ā. You gave him a nudge with you elbow and said āDonāt make me regret it.ā as you said this a small smile appeared on his face. Not a fake one real one this time. āWouldnāt dream of it, sunshine.ā He says with a smirk. And thatās the moment you realised, you didnāt just stop seeing the Mad Hatterās son you started seeing Max.
