Despite first impressions, Hancock wasn't stupid. He wouldn't have been able to build this community back up with Fahrenheit if he couldn't play the game. He also valued Fahr's position in it all. She was one of the few people he could count on to not have ulterior motives. Goodneighbor was filled with old players, and as seen with Bobbi and Finn, many had a bone to pick with Hancock. So it was particularly frustrating for Fahrenheit to continue to push back on Hancock in this warehouse. Why couldn’t they be on the same page here? They've wanted the same things for years. And he had made promises to her. Promises about safety, security, and loyalty. 

“Do you still want to be mayor? Or do you just want to play railroad and happy families?”

These were questions he wasn't ready to answer and he was offended that she could even say that. Yet deep down he was wondering the same thing. He was scared that maybe she was seeing right through him like she always did. 

“What ya getting cozy with the position while I've been out of office?” His voice had bite and by the time Hancock had the words leave his mouth he regretted saying them. Power was an awful thing. Squabbling over it was never something he wanted to do with Fahrenheit. It seemed the longer he spent wearing the hat, the more all of it got to him. It was why he wanted to leave Goodneighbor in the first place, couldn’t Fahr see that? He was trying hard to do right by her and everyone who relied on him. 

Being mayor wasn't his dream. He didn't find it appealing in Diamond City when his brother was campaigning for it and he didn't intend to become one in Goodneighbor. All he wanted was revenge packaged as justice. He wanted to look Vic in the eyes and strip him of his humanity. He wanted to gun down every fucker who abused their power. And when he finally got what he wanted Hancock just fell into the position, being the wrong guy to say the right thing to a bunch of desperate people. He was the choice of those who never had one before.

The water drained a final time. His clothes were heavy and saturated in the sink. He took the time to ring out the water and take a breath to gain clarity.

“What I mean is…I trust ya know what you're doing.” Hancock admits. He walks away from the sink to hook the makeshift clothesline to one of the central support beams. 

“I know I ain’t good at much. Believe that I have enough doubt for the both of us, I don’t need another voice in my head.” 

Dripping clothes get flung over a line that was almost too tall for him. “I got sober once. I can do it again but better. Just promise you’ll still be here if shit goes sideways…” He knew it was a lot to ask her. But it was the one thing he needed. He needed Fahrenheit to stay by his side like she has been.

fahrenheit lowers her gaze with a sigh as she listens to hancock, rubbing at the bridge of her nose in frustration. god, he has her wrapped around his mangled finger. he could stab her and fahr still couldn't leave, be that leaving goodneighbor or hancock himself; she could say all this shit to him, voice her doubts, and she still wouldn't leave his side. maybe hancock will be the death of her one day, or maybe it will be her undying fucking loyalty that does her in. maybe both.

for the longest time, fahr just stands there leaning against the wall with her head lowered and her arms folded. she can't bring herself to reply, not just yet. the words don't feel right: they feel heavy and her mouth won't form them, but her silent defeat is an acceptance that she's powerless in this situation. if not for that feeling that she owes hancock, she might be able to fight back. right now, fahrenheit doesn't want to argue further. believe her, she could, but she's not sure it's worth it.

fahr runs her hands through her hair and sniffs, lowering her gaze from the floor and to the door across the room. "alright," she murmurs, then slowly turns her gaze to the mayor, "fine. do what you've gotta do."

in the meantime, fahrenheit will continue doing what she's done this entire time: hoping for the best and running things as best she can without hancock a hundred percent present. even when he's high out of his mind, which is mostly all the time, he's present. not now that nora is in the picture. he'd left to avoid turning into some kind of tyrant, but fahr knew hancock couldn't ever be capable of doing something like that. no, she's certain there's more to it, and it's all to do with nora.

there's something fucking ridiculous about the fact that it feels like there's a level of jealousy to this, like two women fighting over a man and reducing themselves to piss poor versions of themselves in the process. but this is deeper than that, much deeper, and fahr's not even sure nora knows it. sometimes you have to sacrifice a piece to keep the game going. when she'd said that to nora it had been a threat and she meant it, but she means it even more now that hancock isn't willing to listen to her or see sense.

"i'll always be here," fahr reminds him, lowering her gaze once more, "just don't expect me to sit by and act pleased if you decide to throw bullshit like this on the reg. this place isn't the same without you in it, and i don't like your vault-dweller pulling you away from it no matter your reasons for leaving." fahr glowers at the floor. "soon you'll be telling me you're moving to sanctuary and starting a family."

"you regret it?"

Regret was familiar to him. He regrets not doing more to stop his brother's Mankind for McDonough campaign and sneaking out of the city to get high instead. He regrets stumbling back home and taking out his anger for his brother on his mother then never coming back. He regrets laying there on the dirty mattress shooting up med-x moments before Vic's guys smashed his friend's head in. Too scared and too limp to do anything about it.

If he thought too hard on it, he could pull out threads of regret in his decision to get this close to Nora. A fear that being with him would hold her back. It felt selfish to want her and yet he decided to have her anyway. It was only a matter of time wasn't it? Before he ruins something good. And god was she good. She was the best thing that had ever happened to him.

Hancock is holding to the side of the sink when he hears Fahrenheit force a laugh, answering her question for him. It takes a moment to find the will to plug the drain and run the water again. The splashing water fills the silence between the two of them.

Was he ruining this now too? What he had with Fahr had kept him stable through the last five years. Arguably his longest relationship and it wasn't even tied to sex. He hadn't the slightest clue why Fahrenheit has stayed this long, the caps weren't even that good. They had to have been functioning on some weird form of mutual pity because rock bottom isn't too bad with company.

"you're heading into dangerous territory, hancock, i don't think you know it, but you are. i hope she's worth it. something tells me she won't be."

Her words are sharp, deliberate, and commands a level of respect he can only imitate on that balcony. He hated how she could do that, especially when she used that tone on him. The water begins to spill out of the sink and he turns it off, unbothered by the water that hits the floor.

"When has the territory ever not been fucking dangerous?" Hancock asks, not nearly as enough sway in his voice. He pulls the plug again letting the water drain some before dumping in more detergent.

"And this ain't just about her. It's bigger than fucking in the BPL and trading rings, Fahr." He looks at her now. "The Railroad's gettin' close."

They have been letting the group move about Goodneighbor for awhile. A Synth liberation was something Hancock could get behind, and now he's able to actually help. Not just watch from the statehouse.

"I'm thinkin' bout goin' clean again," Hancock hadn't done so since Vic. And only Fahrenheit knew the successes and consequences of that decision. "...I'm not gonna go cold turkey on everythin' like I did last time...but no jet, no booze, no psycho, buffout, day tripper, or med-x." He pauses for a moment, gathering his thoughts.

"Just two mentats in the morning to clear my head and cigarettes..." He had been thinking about this for awhile. Going clean had worked with taking over Goodneighbor and he didn't want to be a weak link in the Railroad. But there was a fear of the withdrawal or more so what it had pulled out of him. The way his vision had doubled, losing control over his limbs, the nausea. He still wasn't sure if it was the bloodlust in everyone that night or the sobriety. But he had been sedating himself with chems ever since.

and this ain't just about her. it's bigger than fucking in the bpl and trading rings, fahr. the railroad's gettin' close. fahrenheit's head lowers as she listens to hancock speak. there's an unsettling feeling creeping into her bones, an unsteadiness she's felt before and hates. nothing about this feels right. the railroad's fight isn't hancock's, and she's pissed off at the fact that he seems to be putting so much effort into fighting their battles when there are plenty still to be fought for in goodneighbor.

fahr takes a slow, deep breath. her eyes are glued to a crack in the floorboards, her gaze distant as she brings her cigarette to her mouth again and takes a drag. everything feels like it’s crumbling—the castle they built, the efforts they’ve made together. fahr can’t tell whether nora or the railroad is leading the frontal assault. first he wants to run off with the vault-dweller, now he wants to get sober. is this her fucking influence?

it's not as simple with hancock as cleaning up a typical addict. she's seen how going sober affects him, how it almost turned him feral, although maybe that had something to do with the sheer violence of the situation as well. regardless ... it's not something she wants to repeat. it’s not something she thinks he has any business repeating, not for anyone or anything unless it concerns goodneighbor.

she can't hide her unhappiness with him. it's too strong to pretend that everything is fine. it feels like the railroad has infected him with their fucking naivety; fahr didn't bat an eye when hancock started letting them spread their propaganda around, but now it's actually involving him, she's already fed up with it.

"your funeral," she mumbles, taking another drag of her cigarette. for a moment she just stands there against the wall, smoking, taking her time to think over her next response. she looks at hancock after a long pause, her gaze flickering over his hands as he washes his clothes. the reminder of the absence of vic's ring feels like a kick in the gut.

"you sure you know what you're doing?" fahrenheit asks sternly, because she's certain he doesn't. "seriously, hancock. when i said you were entering dangerous territory, i don't think you fucking got what i meant." another long drag of her cigarette before she puts it out against the side of the sink. there's a fire in fahrenheit's eyes as she continues, "do you still want to be mayor? or do you just want to play railroad and happy families?"

"maybe she got sick of fucking you--"

Hancock opened his mouth as if he was about to go off on a lengthy speech.

--with another man's ring on her finger. i'm not some relationship guru, hancock, and if you keep this up i'm gonna start charging caps."

He stayed quiet for the first bit of that. He turned around to shut the water off when it began to touch his fingers in the sink. "I already pay you," He reminded her playfully. He didn't take any of that personally.

The water turned murky as the excess ghoul blood released from the fabric. Just from looking he was sure he'd have to do some spot treatment on the stains. He agitated the water with his hands, scrubbing the problem areas where he could. It seemed that Fahr had the same amount of understanding on the marriage process as he did.

"you didn't swap rings, right? tell me you fucking didn't, hancock."

The quick to speak mayor pretended to be preoccupied with his clothes. Under the water he rubbed the empty spot on his hand where Vic's ring had been for years. He probably could've stayed there for hours, quietly looking into the water but the conversation moved forward.

"what next, hancock, a ghoul-vault-dweller pregnancy?"

"Come on now, ya know I shoot blanks..." His tone was a little softer now as he glances over his shoulder at Fahrenheit. A couple bits of banter surrounding his poor pullout game came to mind, but he didn't say them. Instead he released the plug in the drain to do a second rinse.

"Yeah...I gave her a ring." Hancock admitted, just a fraction louder than the sound of gurgling water in the pipes, "it seemed like the right thing to do."

He didn't know how to tell her that it was Vic's. That night in the statehouse was foggy at best but he knew that she was the one who gave him it. The exchange was obviously nothing like the one he had with Nora, but he still felt a pang of guilt for even offering that particular ring at all. It was just as much connected to Fahrenheit as it was to his personal conquest over Vic.

fahrenheit knows the answer to her question as soon as she's met with hancock's silence. if they hadn't gotten married—accidentally or not—he'd have come back at her with some kind of quip, a tease for her believing he'd do that. but she already knows the answer due to his lack of one. disappointment washes over fahrenheit in a cold wave, and with a sigh, she tilts her head backwards against the wall again.

"you regret it?" fahrenheit asks, if only because he seems so ashamed to admit it. no doubt it's because of her own reaction to the news, so she huffs with unamused laughter. "who am i kidding. you're head over heels."

she pushes herself off the wall, crossing the room to be closer to him. she leans against the wall next to the sink and listens to the pipes gurgling behind her as the water washes through them. her gaze lowers to his hands, counting the rings, noting the absence of one in particular. vic's.

fahrenheit takes a slow, deep breath in order to stabilize her mood, her gaze lingering on the absent ring at his thumb before she looks straight ahead. she can't look at him right now, not his fingers nor his face. she remembers prying all the valuables off vic's cold, dead corpse once she took it off the balcony, keeping that ring for hancock out of sentiment. she'd kept the rest for herself, pawned what she thought most valuable and had given his body a good kick in the ribs for good measure. then she'd gone off to find hancock and give him his little victory present, a reminder of the moment he turned goodneighbor into the place she knows and loves.

what is goodneighbor today? what is hancock without that ring? what is hancock now that nora is in the picture? he's a poor imitation of the man she knows. the man she knows would never hand off vic's ring to some broad he met two months ago as if the history behind it means nothing. there's a feeling of irritation prickling under her skin, making her itch to slam some fucker's head into a wall and watch the life fade from their eyes. instead, the bodyguard stays still with her arms folded, staring straight ahead.

"you're heading into dangerous territory, hancock," fahrenheit warns him slowly, and her words are so serious, so low in tone, that they almost sounds like a promise. "i don't think you know it, but you are."

her gaze returns to hancock then, and she stares at him a moment before she continues, "i hope she's worth it." a beat passes between them, fahr's tone equally as low as before as she continues, "something tells me she won't be." hancock's looking at that vault-dweller and her smooth skin through rose-coloured glasses, and fahrenheit sees right through her.

"The fuck!?" Hancock snaps when she snatches his wrist, only because she made him drop some powdered detergent. The weak box frayed at the edges. The dust of it splayed out across the floor and made him sneeze.

"Not the type of shit I wanna be snortin'" He huffs, but then kicks the box over to see the ingredients list.

Or is it?

The print was too small for him to see down there, and he quickly caught on that Fahrenheit noticed the new ring. He sighed, knowing the the two of them were both well aware he was stalling on all the important bits of what he wanted to actually talk to her about.

"What? Should've got a bigger rock?" He relaxed into that shit eating grin, then slipped out of her grasp so he could find a broom and dustpan.

"Honestly, I dunno what happened," He spoke to her from behind some crates and shelving. "We were layin' in the library under the..." He stopped himself. He hadn't really told Fahrenheit about his spot in the library before. That type of stuff didn't really come up. It felt like too much context to unpack, even for him so he continued.

"Well...we were in the library. And she turns to me, and gives me her weddin' ring, sayin' a bunch of stuff bout how she doesn't need it anymore, and I should keep it." He comes back out with a dustpan and no broom.

"That's a proposal right? When ya give someone a weddin' ring?" Hancock bit at his thumb contemplatively. He squats down, looking at the box again, skimming the ingredients list before using the packaging to loosely brush the detergent into the dustpan.

"I didn't say nothin' really, just put it on... I didn't wanna fuck up the moment..." He carries the dustpan back to the sink and dumps its contents over his clothes. Pouring more from the box for good luck then running the water.

As the sink fills he turns around to face Fahrenheit, leaning against the deep basin. "Am I a wife? The person who gets the ring first is the wife yeah?"

fahrenheit ignores hancock's little outburst of surprise once she grabs hold of his hand, but she lets him go when he slips out of her grasp. she watches, a mix of alarm and exasperation as he moves around the room and explains what happened. fahrenheit's reaction?

"you fucking idiot."

fahr might not be sure whether hancock is married or not, especially given his own uncertainty, but she's sure of one thing: he's a moron. he's always been a moron, but this is a new level of bullshit. it's not the worst thing he's dropped on her doorstep, but it's definitely not the best.

truthfully, fahr isn't entirely sure how marriage works, whether you just exchange rings and it's done—which she suspects—or whether there's a lengthier process. she tries to piece together what she knows of marriage and what he's told her, but eventually she just gets pissed off. she could ask him plenty of questions, most importantly why he didn't ask her to clarify what exactly whether they were about to get engaged or not, but she knows hancock by now. not clarifying—and later not being sure if he's married or not—is exactly the kind of bullshit he'd pull.

"how the hell am i supposed to know?" she demands, annoyed. "maybe she got sick of fucking you with another man's ring on her finger. i'm not some relationship guru, hancock, and if you keep this up i'm gonna start charging caps."

she's all talk and no action on that front, because in the next instant she's continuing, albeit begrudgingly. fahrenheit leans against the nearest wall again, tipping her head back in exasperation as she rubs her face with her hands.

"all i know is you gotta exchange things to actually be married," she says with a sigh. she's pretty sure it used to only be rings that were exchanged, but you make do in the wastes. slowly, fahr's gaze returns to hancock as she continues, "you didn't swap rings, right? tell me you fucking didn't, hancock."

suddenly fahr is reminded of his question. the person who gets the ring first is the wife, yeah? she lowers her head and places a hand at her forehead, mumbling under her breath. "fuck. fuck. only you could get yourself tangled up with some pre-war vault-dweller with hips for days and fall so head over heels that you end up married in the fuckin' bpl. what next, hancock, a ghoul-vault-dweller pregnancy?" fuck that.

In an exaggerated display of courtesy, Hancock tips his hat to Fahrenheit as he walks into the warehouse. Once inside he begins slipping out of his bloody clothes, dumping them into the deep sink in the back of their "warehouse." It was really just old apartments and businesses that they dumped all their shit into.

Once he was down to nothing but his underwear he began to run the water, only to turn it off when he remembered he didn't empty his pockets.

"Took my girl to the BPL," Hancock explained, tossing his things on the nearby counter. His lighter, pack of cigarettes, mentats tin, old wrappers, folded up pieces of paper with illegible notes, a couple caps, shot gun shells. "We got jumped by some raiders who thought they could claim it after the super mutants."

Out came the photo of Nora. He was distracted now. He held it up for Fahr to see with a grin, "Oh! Check this out! This was her pre-war... ain't it neat?" Once satisfied with his little show-and-tell, he opened the mentats tin, downing the last two tablets then neatly placing the newspaper cut out inside.

Hancock shoved his coat back into the sink and began pulling out cleaners from their stock shelves. "Anyway...one of the fuckers shot me. Bullet shattered in my shoulder, I was leakin' all over the place..."

fahrenheit knows exactly the type of interaction this is going to be as soon as he tips his hat to her. he got laid, then. probably more than once. he’s in a good mood. if hancock were another man, fahr might wonder if he’s been drinking, but she knows him well enough to know that he’s always in a perpetual state of being on something.

she closes the door behind them and then leans against the nearby wall to watch hancock as he undresses. she's seen him in varying states so this isn't new. she’s half checked out, if only because that’s how she needs to be when hancock is in a state like this. she'll let him ramble on and then pick out the details where he drops them; that's usually how it works.

took my girl to the bpl. there's a possessiveness when he says my girl that makes fahrenheit irrationally angry, but she bites it down. she watches him unload his junk from his pockets. we got jumped by some raiders who thought they could claim it after the super mutants. that explains the state he came back in.

hancock holds up a photo of nora, preserved in all her pre-war glory. nice hair, clean clothes, looks even snootier then than she does now. she's unimpressed as her gaze returns to hancock, but on the journey there her eyes are forcibly returned to the photo. or rather the hand holding the photo. she tries to catch a glimpse of his hand again as he preoccupies himself with the mentats tin.

anyway … one of the fuckers shot me. bullet shattered in my shoulder, i was leakin' all over the place … fahr doesn't fucking care, not right now. hancock is distracted by cleaning supplies—of all things—by the time fahrenheit grabs his hand and holds it up. the new ring on his finger is fucking obvious. she might not have noticed it if it was a typical band, but it's the exact same one she's seen nora wearing: a dainty gold thing with a small, glistening rock in the middle. fahr remembers it because she's often wondered how many caps she'd get if she sold it. slowly, far too slowly, fahrenheit's gaze returns to hancock's.

"what's this?" she asks quietly, slowly, the kind of quiet before the storm. there's an intensity to fahrenheit's eyes that betrays the coolness of her voice. she wants hancock to say it out loud, to hear him verbalise the words and make them make sense ... because this situation definitely doesn't make sense to her, not if the reason he's wearing that ring is what she thinks it is. how long has it been since nora stepped foot in goodneighbor? definitely not long enough for an engagement. please, for the love of all things fucked up, please have a better explanation than i got engaged. or married. fuck, she hopes he's not married ...

“Heya sister,” Hancock greeted Fahrenheit. Despite his worn out appearance, his demeanor was typical. He stands beside her, snagging the cigarette out of her hand and giving it a puff before placing it back between her fingers. 

“Gonna need to patch up the digs again,” He said, playing with the new hole. After a moment he looks up at her, clearly desperate to speak. He cleared his throat, “you uh got a minute?” 

It was early so there wasn't a lot happening, but the working hum of KL-E-0 was enough for him to want to slip into one of the warehouses for a moment.

fahr's eyes darken with a glare as he steals the cigarette from her fingers, but the look in her eyes softens as soon as it's back in her hand. you uh got a minute? her eyes narrow.

"mm," she simply responds. yeah, she has a minute, and even if she didn't she'd still make time for hancock. but whatever he's about to tell her, she's not sure if she wants to hear it. right now she feels like a mom that's been waiting for her wayward teenage son to stumble back in from a night out on the town and she dreads whatever he's about to tell her.

fahr inclines her head to the door to one of the warehouses, kindly cleaned out by hancock's latest fling. something about nora's existence rubs fahrenheit the wrong way, and she doesn't try to hide it from the vault-dweller. still, she's not about to disrespect her in front of hancock. fahr takes one more drag of her cig before she opens the warehouse door, gesturing for hancock to go in first.

"haha, crap, just—just pretend i never said that. yeah. that'd be great." travis pauses, then hears a knock at the door of his trailer. he swallows thickly, muffled static sounding over diamond city radio as the radio host nudges the microphone without meaning to. "oh god, i think someone's here to kill me. h-hello?" he leans back in his seat, looking toward the door. "it's ... it's open! unless you're here to kill me. then it's locked. please go away." travis clears his throat as he turns his attention back to the radio, queuing up the next song so that he can pay attention to whatever this visitor wants. "a-anyway, uh, here's atom bomb baby by the five stars ..."

"the hell happened to you?" fahr asks, her brows furrowing at the sight of goodneighbor's mayor. there's a cigarette in her hand as she leans against the side of kleo's shop, having watched hancock literally just walk through goodneighbor's front door. his clothes are stained with blood, there are new holes in the fabric, and the man looks a wreck—at least more than he usually does. fahr knows she'll either love this story or hate it. @mayormentats
