Mahiru Koizumi 📷👁️ - Picture-perfect Pain
A strong-minded, no-nonsense photographer who spreads despair through her photographs.
Sensible and confident, Mahiru speaks her mind and is adamant about completing any assigned tasks to a T. When Junko assigns her and Mikan to carry out a particularly arduous task, Mahiru becomes locked in to the point of becoming irritated when any obstacle gets in her way. Her despair derives from taking photos of distressing subject matter and distributing blackmail, as she wishes to photograph the remnants of any positive life instead.
Her despair comes through particularly when a woman reaches out to Mahiru, requesting her to deliver blackmail photos of a certain streamer to her friends.
Mahiru’s domain is located within an abandoned photography facility somewhere in downtown. Her domain is a darkroom littered with dangerous photography-related equipment and vats filled with despair-inducing chemicals. Photos of the despair generals, Junko, the despair generals, and disturbing subject matter are strung up like fairy lights above the vats. At the end of the room stands a tall bookshelf with camera-like weapons.
Sonia Nevermind 👑🩸 - Magisterial Majesty of Despair
A princess who oversees the kingdom of New Novoselic, and one of the highest ranking despair generals. Demure and elegant, Sonia is revered as a pragmatic ruler who is kind and just to all — if you’re in despair, that is. When she isn’t tending to her garden of snapping spider lilies, hosting masquerade balls to determine the next subject to be knighted and join the ranks of her army, or being out and about as a public figure, this princess is ordered by Junko to carry out violent and disturbing executions to those who expressed the smallest sliver of rebellion. This has resulted in her drowning in despair; she bears the guilt of eradicating the kingdom she adored and killed thousands of Novoselicans who did not comply with her orders to dive into despair and flourish in her seemingly safe haven of New Novoselic.
This, of course, does not concern Junko, who grows stronger by the day with the amounts of despair accumulated from the kingdom.
To reach Sonia, one must catch a freight train to New Novoselic, a foggy country located somewhere in Europe. Her domain is the New Novoselic Castle, a towering, hauntingly majestic piece of gothic architecture that appears to be abandoned on the outside. However, if one enters the castle, they will find that the interior is filled with life; the walls are coated in silver-lined thorn-esque wallpaper, the windows are draped in plush velvet curtains, and crystal chandeliers hang from the ceiling like blood dripping out of a fresh wound. Outside in the courtyard, one can take a stroll through the royal garden, which hosts spider lilies and other strange yet beautiful flowers, a hedge maze that no one can escape from, and a pearl-lined gazebo that is waiting for the right opportunity to start a rebellion that doesn’t end in a massacre.
Sayaka Maizono 🎤✨ - Sparkling idol of Despair
A J-pop idol who spreads despair through her songs.
Despite being in despair, Sayaka is regarded as a cheerful and sweet girl who loves all of her fans, whether human or Monokuma. However, when the curtains cover the stage she cannot leave, the idol’s bubbly facade fades to reveal an irritated, bitter, and misanthropic personality. Angry and hate-filled comments regarding her fans and audience spill from her mouth like boiling lava, which brings despair to her; despite everything, she still loves and believes that her fans will be the ones to save her from this life. She is very desperate to leave to the point that she would do ANYTHING to have even four minutes away… even if it means begging for someone to perform on the spot.
Despite her angry and bitter demeanor off stage, Sayaka retains her keen intuition, being able to detect how much Hope someone has. And when the curtains rise once more for her to perform a despair-laced melody, Sayaka will carry on with a special clover-like bracelet for good luck… and some semblance of Hope that she’ll escape.
Sayaka’s domain is a large stage with an audience of glowstick-waving Monokumas. Most of the time, she is bolted to the stage to ensure she cannot leave, so she invites any survivors that have found her domain to perform for their lives while dangerous equipment snaps at them (with the equipment being controlled by stage hand Monokumas, of course). This is the only time Sayaka can move around and leave the stage, but she is always dragged back by a bear trap-like mechanic hidden on the ground to ensure she’ll never stop performing, even if the Monokumas’ cheers have become static to her ears.
Her adversaries have never completed her challenge, as they have either died or given up before they could finish.
Aoi Asahina 🌊🍩
A hopeful athlete who runs a donut shop for survivors.
Well-meaning and upbeat, Aoi is a friendly young girl who tries to look on the bright side of her circumstances (which, as you can imagine, has become difficult in the Despairpocalypse). After shelving her swimming career, Aoi now bakes donuts just a block away from the Theater and hands them out to survivors (free of charge, of course). These freshly-baked pastries have different effects depending on the flavor (for example, a ghost pepper donut can give the consumer a fiery effect to their attacks).
Celestia Ludenberg 🃏👑🎲 - Gambling Sovereign of Despair
A Gothic Lolita-styled gambler who is willingly in despair to obtain everything she ever desired.
Calm and collected, Celestia is an elegant yet intimidating figure who uses mental trickery to win her dangerous gambling matches. She occasionally lets her composed nature slip when she has a bloodthirsty outburst. Her domain is the Risk Castle, a death trap casino that resembles a European castle. Celestia’s victims are either in heavy debt to the gambling sovereign or have willingly entered out of curiosity, causing them taking part in rigged gambling matches that often result in death. On the rare occasion that she sees some qualities that could be of use to her, Celestia dresses her “saved” victims up in vampire-themed staff clothing to help her run the rigged matches (and serve her -effect,y concocted delights on the occasion).
Usually, they are only working for her to pay off massive debts or to fuel their own survival.

Ibuki Mioda ☠️🤘 - Boisterous Musician of Despair
An eccentric, outgoing guitarist who spreads despair through her harsh screamo music.
Unusually upbeat and bold, Ibuki initially seems like a quirky, creative girl who is at best reckless and off-putting. In combat, she is quite unhinged and brutal with a taste for bloodshed. Her despair derives from not being able to spread hope and joy, but rather despair and pain. While she wishes she could break free, she hears Junko’s voice in her ear wires (that are disguised as her piercings), which drives her to inevitably continue spreading despair.
Ibuki is the last to perform in the Despair Stage music festival. She freely roams around and off the stage, utilizing the pyrotechnics and lights to her advantage, and appearing in a poof of smoke from the smoke machines laid around the arena. With her guitar, Ibuki can either use it to send out frequency waves to disorient her opponents, command the Monokuma audience to attack, or simply thrash and mosh to the sweet tune of her enemies’ demise.

Fate has a funny way of uniting these four girls together. This time, there is a change of pace for their setting: they're not meeting in an apocalypse, what a surprise. And with each universe they meet in, their characters differ from their main universe counterparts...
Ella - A former Broadway actress who decided to settle in Japan. She is a bit of a doormat in this AU, having obeyed her mother to the point where she didn't hesitate to take lead roles in shows. To her mother and peers' surprise, she decided to retire and enroll in Hope's Peak Academy, hoping to use the school's resources to hone her skills as an actress and someday make her grand return. Although she puts on a calculating, "perfect" honors student mask in public, Ella is deeply torn; she wants to return to the acting world, but no longer wishes to take on the massive pressure of being a lead actress. Perhaps a mysterious mask can help her seek the ending she truly wants...
Ashlyn - An online streamer who moved to Japan to pursue higher education. Rather than live with her single mother, Ashlyn reconnected with her father, who accepted her preferred identity. She is a very charismatic, eccentric woman who often eludes her peers. Despite having a mass following online, Ashlyn prefers to spend her days at Hope's Peak in solitude, not wanting to draw much attention to herself. When Ella accidentally drops a wooden mask, Ashlyn is torn between two paths: returning it to the honors student or wearing it to see how it can draw out her potential.
Morana - A specter who haunts the hallways of Hope's Peak. Unlike her main universe self, this Morana didn't pursue a career as a reaper. Rather, she took an elevated course in the Underworld to wander the world to haunt people and harvest their fear to keep the sand rivers of the Underworld healthy. As she takes her new career very seriously, Morana is a strict, no-nonsense specter who intently studies the fears each student has to use to her advantage. One day, she stumbles across the mask. Recognizing its craftsmanship from the Norse god Loki, Morana is understandably hesitant to try it on. But when she learns of its abilities, well...
Rue - A former protege of otherworldly champions. In this universe, Rue was rescued from the Yiga Clan and taken in by the Champions. Wanting to halt the guilt that came from their origins and use their powers for good, Rue took on the mantle of a Champion in training, spending months with each Champion to hone their skills and adapt to any situation. When the time came for Ganon to awaken, Rue fell critically ill. Not wanting the young protege to fall in battle, Zelda opened a portal and bid Rue farewell. Rue's first few days in the new world were a bit uneasy, with them frequently getting maimed by the archery club. They couldn't bring themselves to fight back, as they were still reeling from the sick period and were in shock from not being able to properly bid goodbye to the Champions (learning that they died didn't help their case either...). Only then, when they meet a certain nurse and are offered the opportunity to fight back against their "bullies," that Rue regain their confidence.

Revamping our Girls in @avas-wonderland’s Mastermind!Sasha AU.

If Morana Libitina could go back in time, she would try to befriend Sasha Kaneko before the world imploded in upon itself.
It seems that wherever an apocalypse appears, these four girls always find a way back to each other, and this time is no different.
Morana - A specter that rose from the Underworld to find a name for herself in the Living World. She wanders adrift from place to place, and the one time she stayed was when she stationed herself in a hotel to find better signal for a DS she found. She befriended Sasha through a chat forum in the DS, connecting with the electrician day and night (when she was available). Since Morana never fell into the River Miserius, she has a more optimistic outlook on humanity. She is a much more spirited, positive girl in general, finding solace in talking to Sasha and becoming worried when she stops replying one day. Her signature item is a sickle as opposed to her usual scythe.
Ashlyn - A well-off live-streamed living with her girlfriend Ella. Since Ashlyn received more money from her videos and streams, she moved out and bought an apartment with Ella in uptown Harajuku. Ashlyn sports a more relaxed and giddy demeanor in this AU, as she is happier to reveal her secret on her own terms. Her signature item is a pair of wired earbuds as opposed to her signature headphones.
Ella - A retired actress living with her girlfriend Ashlyn. After making a stop in Osaka for a show, Ella decided to quit acting when she finally got an opportunity at a lead role. While her mother opposed, Ella withdrew enough money from her mother’s account to find a new way of living. She stumbled across Ashlyn by chance while touring houses, and when the two decided on an apartment at the same time, they knew it was fate. They moved in together, and an unmasked Ella now works as a waitress at a local themed cafe. She’s a lot more cynical and less elegant than her normal self, having gotten rid of the ribbon and braided hairstyle that her mother used to assert control over the former star. Her signature item is a coffee pot, as opposed to her discarded ribbon.
Rue - An otherworldly creature. After escaping another realm, Rue wandered the streets of Japan with nothing but survival on their mind. They barely scraped by, living off thrown-out food and bathing themselves in hot springs. It wasn’t pretty, but they did whatever it took to survive. They were found by Mikan one day and nursed to a standard condition. But before they could learn each others’ identities, the nurse had to push Rue out the window so they wouldn’t be spotted. Rue is a lot more skittish and distrustful of their friends, behaving more like a feral cat or raccoon in this AU. Their signature items are their brooch and a stethoscope they “accidentally” stole from the infirmary (in order to remind themselves to find Mikan).
When the Tragedy began, the girls barricaded themselves in the thrift store and turned it into a home. To scrape by, they stole produce from a nearby grocery store (as well as its freezer for Morana to sleep in). Morana, still highly concerned for Sasha, decided one day to leave the comforts of the thrift store and find her. The other girls come along on the journey, deciding to brave the Tragedy and find the mastermind behind Sasha’s disappearance and the end of the world.
Maybe we should tell them who the mastermind is.

Mukuro Ikusaba ❌🔪💥 - Commander of Cold Despair
Junko Enoshima’s loyal second-in-command first, and her sister last.
Cold and reserved, Mukuro presents herself as a diplomatic soldier who shows little regard for people's suffering. She is endlessly loyal to Junko but is also aware that she could be betrayed or killed by her sister at any moment. As the captain of the Despairpocalypse's army, Mukuro oversees the Monokuma and Despair armies planted in the world (alongside Sonia). Mukuro also has a flare gun to summon the Megakuma, the biggest Monokuma unit ever made, if she is gravely injured.
so i think we kind of universally dislike how junko converted the 77th class into despair with the brainwashing instead of something meaningful, and i see that a lot of people rewrote that plot, or ignore it, or tend to imagine it differently. i never really thought about it cause i’m usually a person who sticks to canon but i completely agree that the despair video for the remnants is pretty bullshit.
so please, share with me either in replies or reblogs your own personal rewrites of how the danganronpa 2 cast should’ve experienced the conversion to despair. you can also talk about specific characters if you like, not the class as a whole. i’m just curious!
Consider this an addition, I guess…
In my AU, Junko recruited those on the side of despair through means of absolute conviction. She was successful quite a few times.
Some joined her army to exact vengeance on those who wronged them in their lives (for example, Mikan joined to unleash all of her repressed rage and agony on her bullies and abusers).
Others joined to obtain a goal that others thought were impossible (for example, Celestia joined to finally own that European castle she wanted).
And then there’s those who joined out of safety for themselves or others (for example, Kiyotaka joined as he believed that it was better than getting executed).
Those who opposed despair either were roped into working for them, escaped with their lives to preserve what little hope they had left, or were executed.
