Happy Valentine’s Day!
Valentine’s Day Happy Valentine's Day!
For all the ragging I give Arizona it really does give us the most breathtaking sunsets. Especially when perfectly equipped with a silhouetted saguaro and the hazy desert horizon.

Saturday we were graced with little snowflakes floating around our house late at night. We were both hopeful (maybe more me) for a white blanketed morning, but the flakes stopped falling before we went to bed.
The next morning though we could see the hills in the not-so-far distance covered in patches of white, so we went on a snow hunting adventure!
Only ten minutes away up into the “mountains” of Bagdad we found inches of snow on the shaded sides of those mountains. Some of the trees and bushes still had clusters of snowflakes resting on their branches!
We followed dirt roads up into the cold air until we found enough snow to give Freddie a worthy snowy experience.
He ended up with very cold fingers and frosty toes, but enjoyed pretending to eat the snow and throwing it into the air.
Ellie REALLY loved shoving her face into the snow and rolling, jumping, and running in it. She also ate a lot of it.
We continued admiring the snow from our warm car until the sun went down.
Now that I’ve gotten a taste of my favorite season (snow season) I want more. So PLEASE Bagdad lets get some of that delicate frozen rain in our little town so I can feel somewhat satisfied by this 70 degree winter we’ve been having.
I miss snow!!

This girl is going to think my face is a camera lens…I have already taken more photos of her than days she has been alive! I can’t wait until I can be dressing her up in all the adorable outfits waiting patiently folded in their drawers and taking pictures of her in each one! Today was the cute hedgehog swaddle blanket we got from our Amazon Welcome Box!

Toddlers are hard. Newborns are hard. Together, they make a very tired mom.
Since we brought home our little girl we had Christmas and family flood our house then when it got quieter things got real.
The waking nights have been rough with a gassy girl so our mornings usually consist of pj’s until noon (or all day), a Disney movie, cozy blanket newborn cuddles, and off-brand Captain Crunch.
Sometimes the house is cluttered and dinner doesn’t get made, and sometimes I have the energy to do both but then at 5:00 I really miss my nap-hour while Freddie slept. But it’s the first month and we are adjusting and we will find our routine without tv sometime soon.
And, as everyone who ever complains about their children always says, it’s totally worth it.

Happy New Year 2017
2017. On the eve of the first birthday of our first child as I was making preparations for the party I froze in the middle of the kitchen holding green ribbon as I realized I. Was. Pregnant. Then May through December I grew bigger and bigger (and more and more easily irrationally irritated) before we were surprised by a baby girl two weeks early finishing off 2017 with another little Horrocks…

I was prepared, mentally, for a New Years baby who would greet 2018 at midnight and become the first baby born in the new year. But of course we have no way of controlling or predicting this.
Instead I was given an early Christmas present. Six days before Christmas we will be celebrating her every year. A little girl who I have already dressed up and forced into being my tiny model, but what a cute model she is!
I hope everyone had a cozy fluffy Christmas spent with their families and loved ones.
Merry Christmas I was prepared, mentally, for a New Years baby who would greet 2018 at midnight and become the first baby born in the new year.
After spending December 18th stuck on the couch nine months pregnant, sneezing, coughing, and aching all over I decided that since I had been not able to sleep well the night before I was entitled to take a sleeping pill. So at 8:00 I popped one in my mouth and fell asleep watching Tool Time with Grant.
After we somehow made it to bed around 10:00 and I was soundly sleeping through my cold Grant woke me asking me why I was wet. I had slept through my water breaking.
When I realized what had happened my first thought was: is there any way I can just lay back down and sleep for another quick twenty minutes?
Is this really happening? Is this really happening now before Christmas? Two weeks before her due date? Am I going to have a baby tonight?
These were the other questions that started racing through my head.
We quickly packed our bag and Freddie’s bag (all signs of how unprepared we were), dropped off our happy toddler with a friend and drove into the night to the hospital.
I was not having contractions so we didn’t feel stressed or rushed, though Grant still took the excuse to drive fast.
Contractions started at the hospital when they put the iv in me with Pitocin to speed them up so it wouldn’t last longer than the night.
I watched Grant sleep on the couch while I suffered through contractions and wished more than anything that I could just relax and sleep. Then I asked for an epidural.
It kicked in around five in the morning and an hour and a half later we had our tiny, tiny little girl crying in my arms!
She was born at 6:37.
I was so tired and just wanted to sleep. It was hard fighting that sleeping pill, but the contractions had helped.
We admired our small bundle, ordered breakfast, and finally relaxed enough to take short little naps in between feedings and pokes and all the things that happen during hospital stay.
We had to stay two days and missed Freddie very much, but it was nice to bond with our nameless baby…who remained nameless until right before we left and we had to fill out the paperwork.
And there was Edith Mabel Horrocks.
Edith is my grandma and great-grandma’s name, so it was special to me to name her after them. Especially with how much influence and love my grandma gave me and everyone around her during her life.
Mabel is a very cute name that came from Grant’s side of the family. His dad’s great grandma. We like family names.
She was so small she barely fit into our carseat when we finally drove home.
Freddie was very happy to see us and thought the “baby” was fun. He now says her name and points to her when we ask who his sister is.
We are a little growing Horrocks family!
In the Hospital After spending December 18th stuck on the couch nine months pregnant, sneezing, coughing, and aching all over I decided that since I had been not able to sleep well the night before I was entitled to take a sleeping pill.
This last weekend our little growing family had the opportunity to join the elite of Bagdad and go spend two nights in the adorable company cabin way out in the middle of the Arizona trees and small mountains.
A generous friend of Grants loaned us his razorback so we had a lot of fun driving down the dusty dirt roads searching for ruins and other magical things hidden in the nature around us.
We hiked a short mountain (making our own trail) to search for arrowheads and cooked tri-trip on an open fire while soaking in the sunset from the cabin door.
Everything about the rustic cabin was perfection. It was old, though we weren’t sure how old, but updated with adorable furnishings of moose, deer, bears, and any other country wildlife you could think of.
The fireplace was amazing. I REALLY want a fireplace in my future cabin home where we can sit by the cozy fire and watch the snow fall….though there was no snow this weekend.
I did roast marshmallows and make smores from that fireplace though! And it goldened my marshmallows perfectly.
There was absolutely no service anywhere around the cabin and it felt nice to be away from technology for a couple of days.
Grant and I got to cuddle, talk, and enjoy the beauty of the cabin and everything around us.
It was a happy fall weekend in nature.

A Swing on the Moon
A Swing on the Moon
We hooked up a swing to the moon so Freddie could fly through outer space! Actually it’s a composite photo, which I have been very interested in trying lately and so gave it a shot! I took the photo of the full moon when we were camping a month ago and then later the photo of Freddie in the swing just for this. The “before” photo is everything cut out and placed together without any extra added…

Since Freddie’s favorite thing to do in the whole world is to swing a bat we figured for Halloween we should give him an ax! It only makes him slightly more dangerous than usual.
I chose lumberjack family because it’s adorable on a toddler, easy, and Grant fits the look! We just don’t live in the right place, but maybe dressing like we lived in the woods would help us feel a little closer to the trees.
Jeans, boots, beanie, and suspenders for Grant were all things we already had, so all we needed were matching shirts, suspenders for Freddie, and of course an ax!
I was unsuccessful at finding a cheap plastic one so resolved to make one out of a wrapping paper roll and cardboard. Then Grant made an offer.
He cut, sanded, painted, and taped together an adorable (and sturdy) ax for Freddie to wield for the night! I was so impressed!
So Freddie had an ax and I cut and sewed some adult suspenders into Freddie sized ones and with a few shopping experiences and multiple shirts to take back we had our costumes!
It was a Halloween party with all the best things. Treats, drinks, friends, activities, and lots of costumes! We saw little witches, robots, turtles, princesses, pirates, and another cute lumberjack boy!
The three of us Horrocks lumberjacks actually won in a categoried costume contest! We got fun age-personalized prizes for each of us. It was a good Halloween night!

Freddie has a special smile for his grandpa that he keeps reserved for those precious moments when he sees him walk through the door. It’s like he is dipped in sunshine as the glow consumes his whole face and all he wants is to be in his grandpa’s open arms.

I love a good pumpkin patch. One where you wander through the vines, mud, and uneven lumps in the ground to find that perfect plump pumpkin. And I love that we get to decide what “perfect pumpkin” means to us.
Some like the largest, most misshapen ones (like my dad), and others might choose the ones that look like clip art. My mom prefers a pumpkin with a long trailing vine still connected to the stem.
I was so excited to go to Redding and visit my childhood pumpkin patch. Arizona, at least the area I am in, doesn’t have the mud, vines, and lumps when you buy a jack o’ lantern.
Instead there is only hay and placed pumpkins that sit among the rides and activities for kids.
I wanted the whole package. And I was so happy to get the chance to have it! In the place I remembered visiting as a kid and taking pictures with the orange squash riddled throughout the background. I wanted that for Freddie, even if he is a little young to remember any of it.
So out we twisted into Nash Farms where we experienced goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, train rides, gigantic bags of kettle corn, slides, teeter-totters, and of course an orange and green field of pumpkins.
Nash is definitely my favorite place to visit in Redding during the October season to fill my Halloween needs for me and my family.

Freddie and I spent some special days among family in Redding this last week. We were able to capture a handful of mommy and mommy-loving-little-boy photos, which is rare as I am always the one hiding behind the camera. Thank you my wonderful Terra cousin who beautifully caught these giggle filled moments in the Redding sunshine.

Tour of the White Mountains
Tour of the White Mountains
Even though the morning started out with restless eyes, we were all excited as the countdown to the race began. Grant started toward the back as we did not know to line up early, but when the race started he was off! There were 440 bikers in his 35-mile race and in huge groups they turned the corner and disappeared into the trail. Freddie and I hung around and watched a few of the smaller races…

Camping in the White Mountains
Camping in the White Mountains
After learning that none of the official camp sites were open Grant decided to drive out into the woods and make our own campsite. We drove past beautiful cabin houses and with a right turn were suddenly in the trees. We found a small nook and set up camp just off the dirt road only minutes from the race’s starting line. That night was a full moon. And it was bright. It was so light outside from…
