4 Paws Family and supporters in the greater Dayton, Ohio region: Four-year-old Jesse is trucking along in his efforts to raise money for a service dog, and an AWESOME seven-year-old named Beckham decided earlier this week that he wanted to break open his piggy bank and give all his savings, and convince others to donate as well. Beckham handed Jesse nearly $500, and tomorrow is running a lemonade stand with the help of Jesse and his sister, the proceeds of which will also go to Jesse's Journey to Independence. If you're in the area, please stop by between 9a and 3p tomorrow for a glass of lemonade, and to support two seriously amazing young people demonstrating humanity at its very best.
We are *very* excited to start our May training class on Monday. This dog is A'Kos (pronounced "Eikos"), and he'll be meeting his new best buddy, Kender, after a successful 4 Paws 4 Kender campaign! A'Kos is very laid back, friendly, and attentive, and loves to be petted. He's almost a year old, born 5/25/13 to parents Gil (a Golden Retriever) and Delilah (a Labrador) as part of the Hawke litter, named a for special little guy named Hawke whose struggle with seizures earned him his angel wings. Each puppy in the litter was named for a type of hawk, and A'Kos means "white falcon" in Turkish. He was born here at the 4 Paws facility, then spent some time being raised in one of our prison programs by inmates doing good works. After that, he went to college! In our 4 Paws for Ability at WSU program at Wright State University, A'Kos spent a semester with a graduate student who helped socialize and train him. He accompanied her everywhere--to class, to restaurants, the mall, and especially to her job at the reference desk in the campus library, where he was a big hit with students. Going everywhere with her helped get him ready for being among people in various settings when he goes into service for Kender. Last week, Kender received a special letter and photo from Kender in the mail, and we hear he's SUPER excited to meet his new friend. Stay tuned throughout the next two weeks for lots of great photo and video from the training classes!
Hi! Duante, 4 Paws' media relations coordinator, here, along with our development director, Kelly. We have a visitor this afternoon in the media relations office--it's Chloe, one of the cats who lives in our office.
Chloe is no freeloader, however; she and her sister, Coconut, earn their stay as part of our staff! They're brought in during the training process for dogs that are being sent to homes that also have pet cats. This means that if you have a feline family member, when you receive your 4 Paws service dog, it will not chase or bully, but will know how to live in harmony with your cat!
Chloe is a youthful, easygoing ten years old, very friendly, and by far the most talkative cat you'll ever meet. She rarely comes down to this end of the facility to say hello, but today she surprised us.
After poking around for a bit, scratching her furry little face on the corners of my laptops, and curiously examining the computer mouse for any similarities to the real-life version, she determined that the press release I was working on needed some tweaking. She helped herself to the keyboard and pranced around on it for a few minutes, sniffed at the screen, nodded in approval, tossed her tail into the air, and sashayed back down the hall.
We are, as she frequently reminds us, honored by her presence.

We have a very sleepy puppy today... Meet Weber, one of the Grill Litter; his six siblings are brothers Lynx, Viking, and Traeger, and sisters Saffire, Terra, and Aussie. Born on March 12, they are all seven weeks old today. Right now, this super-cuddly bunch of golden retrievers is working on being handled lots and carried around the room, sitting on equipment while getting treats. They love watching traffic from the window and playing with toys. Right now, we're introducing luring and lured sit exercises. Weber? Well, some of his siblings are pretty darn playful and active, but this fella is very laid back. Mostly, he likes to cuddle. That is, when he's awake...
We here at 4 Paws headquarters in Ohio are proud to announce that the Greene County Board of Commissioners recognized 4 Paws among its 2013 Greene County Achievers at its annual report last Friday. 4 Paws was honored at the meeting for being selected in the Toyota 100 Cars for Good program, in which our organization won a new transport van. Pictured, from left to right, are Greene County Commissioner Tom Koogler, 4 Paws CEO/executive director Karen Shirk, and Greene County Commissioner Alan Anderson.
CAREER CHANGE DOGS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE TOO!
Dear Karen,
I adopted my Labrador Retriever, Santos, from 4 Paws for Ability on March 11, 2011. Santos is a sweet, laid-back kind of guy. Though he was not suited to a career as a service dog, he has enriched my life and the lives of many others. Since 2012, Santos and I have been certified with Therapy Pets of Greater Cincinnati. We visit nursing homes, children at Shriner's Hospital and a group of autistic children at an elementary school. Santos loves going to the library and visiting the 3rd grade classes at a local elementary where children share books with him. Thank you to 4 Paws for Ability and to the prison inmate handlers who worked with him to shape such wonderful companion. I've attached a picture of Santos at the Public Library. Sincerely, Kathleen Scahill

Pay It Forward to 4 Paws for Ability
XENIA, Ohio — 4 Paws for Ability is proud to announce the partnership with Pay It Forward (PIF) Apparel, LLC, in an effort to Pay it Forward.
Kicking off in March, this cause-marketing partnership will include the opportunity for you to purchase a fabulous PIF T-shirt!
The promotion will last year round, starting in March, then again in May, September and November.
“We are thrilled to partner with PIF! At 4 Paws for Ability, we strive to ‘pay it forward’ every day in the work that we do,” said Karen Shirk, 4 Paws for Ability founder and executive director.
PIF T-shirts cost $23 each and 4 Paws for Ability will receive 25 percent of each shirt sold. That means 4 Paws for Ability will obtain nearly $6 per shirt to benefit more children with disabilities. That is after all, what 4 Paws for Ability is all about! In fact, over the past 15 years, 4 Paws for Ability has placed approximately 700 service dogs with children with disabilities.
“Our goal has always been to enrich the lives of children with disabilities by the training and placement of quality, task trained service dogs to provide increased independence for the children and assistance to their families. And we think cause-marketing with PIF will prove to work hand-in-hand with our everyday intentions as a team,” continued Shirk.
Today, placing approximately 100 dogs a year, 4 Paws For Ability is the largest organization whose primary mission is to place service dogs with children and one of the only organizations to have no minimum age requirements. We place almost every type of service dog available and never turn down a child who does not “fit” into one of the traditional service dog categories. Our Multipurpose Assistance Dog is a dog that encompasses all those children who do not fit into the traditional service dog types and/or who have disabilities that fit into more than one type of dog trained.
Many of the families who come to 4 Paws do so asking if we can help their child who may have a disability not addressed by any of the service dog agencies they have located.
While some children, for example children who have only the diagnosis of Autism, fit clearly into a specific type of service dog, (The Autism Assistance Dog), many of our families have children with multiple issues, or diagnoses that do not seem to be addressed directly in the typical service dog categories, for example Down’s Syndrome, Fragile X, Apraxia, ADHD, a variety of mental health diagnosis, life threatening medical illnesses such as cancer, and medically frail children…to name a very few.
