Life Story: Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and traveling to Carmel every summer to visit her cousins and Aunties, Magdalena Vega, or Maggie was raised in a very hustle and bustle environment. Life thrives for her- the fog cooling her down, the inland hills her slides. She grew up within her own pocket- a bright girl with bright imaginings.
Naturally, being raised by scientists and teachers didn’t sway her from that. She would laugh with her aunt, who just so happened to be an aeronautic engineer, ride on the back of her uncle- a molecular biologist, run into the arms of her pawpaw, a physicist at Lawrence Livermore. Her aunt (who was married to the molecular biologist) gave her the idea that she could teach as a profession. This gave her a step up in high school, a major preplanned. She had landed on going to San Francisco State University or UC Berkeley to major in Aeronautic Engineering, eventually get her teachers license, and teach math or engineering within the districts of the bay.
Life came easy for her, college milling around and she found herself sat in a stifling room in Dwinelle hall with one Ryland Grace. The two found themselves walking through the campus during their four years as classmates, trading who buys coffee for who, trading lame UC Berkeley sweaters, and sitting in the still quiet of the foggy witching hour at the top of Sather Tower.
Their behaviors did not change much, after they graduated. They remained close, meeting weekly to discuss whatever they wandered to- various encounters with other classmates, the latest updates in space, and how their various new levels of education were going. Quiet days led to quiet nights, sitting in an apartment with vinyl flooring and attempting to make sense of the other’s thesis.
While Grace then moved to pursue teaching, Maggie was left in the dust, remembering the diagnosis she had. Suddenly she was a child again, looking up at the stars and feeling utterly alone. She would not have kids, and aeronautics had pulled her in deeper than she had imagined. So, she watched her friend and would occasionally visit the classroom, despite the pain it brought her. Life became lonely, and she found herself staring at the stars once more.
The news of their sun brought her reeling in, visiting Grace about every day, rehashing it. Neither of them were astrophysicists, but surely, she figured, they could try to figure something out.
And they sure did figure something out, sat in the lab across from each other, heads of their departments. Grace would figure out what to do, and Vega would find how to contain it. Their proximity brought comfort and familiarity, more late nights spent sitting on the swaying ship trying to eat ramen.
So, when Stratt pulled her aside, just minutes after the explosion, she would only ask to say goodbye to Grace and her aunts and uncles.
Her goodbye was rendered useless when she roused from her coma years later and saw Grace, sat miserable next to her bed.
Now 33, her hair too long, and her body unfamiliar, they walked through the ship, trying to remember each other. Their college days repeated, minus the fog and Sather Tower, and Maggie found herself staring again, a piece of her soul returning. She may not have words for what they were or are, but it was comfortable.
Hours were spent back to back in the simulation room, wracking their brains to recall what should’ve been known.
(Okay that’s enough I’m tired)
Appearance: standing at aprox. 5’8”, Maggie is woefully average. On the Hail Mary, her hair is long, like, really long for wavy hair, reaching down to the tops of her legs. She does have salt and pepper hair. (Naturally, I feel I must include her legs haven’t been shaven in like 10 years. She tries but beard trimmers don’t cut it and she doesn’t have enough energy to deal with leg hair, of all things.) it’s normally worn in a braid, and the front pieces are held back by blue light glasses that she pushes up to get a better view. She has green eyes, often reminding the two of the dense foliage around the bay, the trees planted on all the streets of Berkeley. Like Grace- her build is unnaturally muscular from being in a coma. Her skin, like muscles, is unnaturally kept.
Personality: she tends to write on her arms and she’s pretty restless. Grace laughs because of it, and always had. The only times he saw her still was with him.
Fear creeps into her heart, before she learned that Eridians existed. Fear of being alone. This isn’t helped by her lack of family, made or found. She did not think she would have biological children, the idea frightening her, yet the change from don’t want to can’t have changed her. When she realized she couldn’t be a teacher because of this lack of family, she formed family with Grace, and eventually Rocky.
Her strength comes from her logic and thought process, on par with Grace, in different areas of knowledge.
I rewatched Fall Guy cause it’s been a minute and ooohhhhh I love it so much. I had to draw the brothers that never was, off to their respective murder attempts.
Grace making huge advencements in the Eridian medical field.
Turns out there's a childhood disease to the tune of measles that erodes the carapace, and the first symptom shows up about a week before any actual damage is caused.
Grace comments to Rocky that one of his students seems to be turning oxidisation-green. About a week later that student has to be hospitalised for this illness.
Eridian scientists realise pretty quick that Grace can detect the illness long before any of their equipment can, and when caught that early it is much, much easier and safer to treat.
Not only is Grace celebrated in the scientific field for his knowledge and for his part in saving the world, he becomes a beacon of hope for doctors and parents and children on Erid.
i headcanon Adrian to be an environmental landscaper and architect, who designs clothes for fun because they're just that talented and badass. they spearheaded the making of Grace's biodome and his erid-cultural closet lol
the joy of project hail mary is an autistic coded person literally crossing the stars to save the life of his autistic coded best friend (qpr style) and there is just. hardly any media that emphasises the value of platonic relationships so much and seems to understand how these affect autistic people on a baseline level. grace abandons any prospects of traditional romance or marriage to be with his best friend for the rest of his life, and for my money, he never goes back to earth — because he’s found everything he could wish for.
Holy moly guys wdym people piss me off when they sexualize characters close to me … wdym… haha it’s definitely not fiction kinning and self shipping (nonsharing) right… right?
Very rushed concept arts, I'm too lazy to do proper rendering but I had Simon's design floating on my head the whole day so here!! It's not my best work but i hope you guys enjoy
